'FASTENING FOR FRAMES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 8, 1905.
Application filed December 9, 1904. Serial No. 236.202.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT GILLEsPIE FRASER, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Fastening for Frames, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
My invention relates to fastenings for frames, and admits of general use, but is of peculiar service when used in connection with frames for mirrors, pictures, and the like in which it is desirable to secure a glass plate or analogous member so as to hold the same firmly in position.
The principal objects of my improvement are to enable the glass plate or analogous member to be firmly held in position within the frame, and yet to allow the ready removal thereof without danger of breakage and without disturbing the framework.
Another purpose is to enable the same frame to be used in connection with glass plates or backings of different thicknesses, the variations in thickness being compensated for, as hereinafter described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts. in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan view showing the back of a mirror equipped with my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary plan View showing a cornerpiece and the fastenings appertaining thereto, the cornerpiece being partly in section. Fig. 3 is a section upon the line 3 3 of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrow and showing a miterface 9, together with the parts adjacent there to. Fig. 4 is an elevation of one of the cornerpieces 12 removed from the frame, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the clampingplate 13.
The rails 6, 7, and 8 are provided with mitered faces 9 and fitted together in the usual manner, so as to form a frame. These rails are provided with ledges 10, preferably integral therewith, for supporting a mirror-plate 11 or any e uivalent therefor, such as a picture with its acking. The frame is provided with corner-pieces 12, each having a raised portion 12 connected thereto by means of an integral portion 12". Each corner-piece is further provided with two slots 12, substantially parallel with each other, and pass ing through each slot is a screw 12 By means of these slots and screws the cornerpiece may be adjusted accurately with reference to the outer edges of the frame. Clamping-plates 13 are provided with bent portions 14 integral therewith and also provided with an aperture 15, which is engaged by a thumb-screw 16.
My invention is used as follows: The frame being put together in the usual manner, the corner-pieces 12 are mounted in position and adjusted by means of the screws 12 and slots 12. The clamping-plates 13 are neXt placed in position, so that-the portions 14 of each plate pass loosely under the raised portions 12 of one of the corner-pieces. The thumb-screw 16 is now turned so as to bear upon the mirror-plate 11 or analogous member or members and hold thesame firmly in position. Each corner of the mirror-plate or its equivalent is secured by one of the thumb-screws 16. In order to remove the plate 11 or its equivalent, the thumb-screws 16 are severally loosened and the plate taken out. If it be desired to have one of the thumb-screws 16 bind in a different place, the screws 12 are loosened, the corner-plate 12 adjusted, and the screws 12 tightened. It will be noted that by this arrangement the n1irror-plate or picture can be secured firmly in position regardless of its thickness and yet be removed at a moments notice. The corner-pieces 12 are made of metal and are of substantially L shape; but I do not claim, broadly, the use of a metallic corner-piece.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of a frame, cornerpieces mounted thereon and provided with raised portions, a clamping-plate to be pushed under said raised portions, and a screw revolubly mounted upon said clamping-plate for the purpose of forcing the same into engagement with said raised portions of said corner-piece.
2. The combination of a frame, a cornerpiece mounted thereon, means for adjusting said corner-piece relatively to said frame, a clamping plate for engaging said cornerpieoe, and means for tightening said clamping-plate against said cornerpiece.
3. The combination of a plurality of framerails, a metallic corner-piece for holding the same together, means for securing said corner-piece upon said rails, a clamping-plate provided with portions for engaging said corner piece, and a screw operatively connected With said clamping-plate and adapt ed to engage a surface adjacent thereto so as to bind said clamping-plate against said corner-piece.
4. The combination of a frame, a metallic corner-piece of substantially L shape mounted thereupon and provided with raised ends substantially parallel with the adjacent surfaces of said rails, a flat clamping-plate of metal provided With portions for engaging said raised ends, and a screw revolubly mounted upon said clamping-plate and provided with a portion for engaging a surface, thereby forcing said clamping-plate into firm engagement With said raised ends.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
ROBERT GILLESPIE FRASER.
