SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 795,181, dated July 18, 1905. Application filed March 3l., 1904:. Serial No. 200,990.
Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. ILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bosqueville, in the county of McLennan and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Plates and Attaching Devices rIherefor, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a novel construction of plate and attaching means therefor, and has for its object to provide a plate which may be secured to a table or to the leaf of a childs chair in a manner to prevent it from being removed by the child.
A specific object of the invention relates to a novel construction of parts embodying' a spring member for removably attaching' the plate to a table or other similar article.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood, I have illustrated the same in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a bottom plan view, the springattaching device being turned to one side to show the recess in the bead. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view through the plate and attaching device and the portion of the table'to which it is applied.
Referring now to the drawings, l indicates a metallic plate which is provided with a central thickened portion or boss 2, in which is formed a screw-threaded aperture 3, opening from the bottom of the plate.
5 indicates a spring member having a straight arm 6, provided near its end with an aperture and a curved member 7, which toward its free end approaches the straight arm 6 and is provided on its upper portion with prongs 8.
9 indicates an annular bead provided on the under side of the plate,having a portion thereof cut away to provide a space lO of the width of the arm 6 of the spring member.
In this form of the invention the arm 6 is tirst secured to the plate by means of a screw 11, passed through the hole in the arm and screwed into the aperture 3, the outer portion of the arm 6 resting in the space 10 of the bead 9. The plate is now secured to the table by passing the spring member over the edge portion of the table, as in Fig. 2, and when so positioned it will be seen that the prongs 8 will prevent the plate from being pulled laterally off the table. Of course to remove the plate it is simply necessary to insert the linger under the inner end of the curved member 7 and pull the same downward, when the plate can be readily slid from ofi' the table.
rlhe purpose of providing the space 10 for receiving' the straight arm 6 of the spring member is to prevent the plate from being rotated when secured in position.
I contemplate the application of the device for other purposes than those indicated in the speciiicationas, for instance, on ships and in dining-cars. It will also be apparent that plates used in connection with my invention can be made of any hind of ware or material of which plates are usually made. It may be further mentioned as one of the advantages of the construction outlined that the attacl ing devices are removable when not in use, allowing the plate and the parts of the attaching device to be readily cleansed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is;
A plate provided with a central boss having a screw-threaded aperture opening on its under side and with an annular bead near its edge portion having a portion thereof cut away to provide an elongated recess, and means for removably attaching said plate to a suitable support comprising an arm bent upon itself to afford a substantially parallel spring member, said arm being adapted to be inserted in said recess and having at its inner end portion an aperture, and means for detachably securing the plate to said arm comprisinga screw passed through the aperture therein and screwed into the screw-threaded aperture of said boss.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
VILLIAM D. WILLIAMS.
