CHAIR.
S1?EGI]5IGATIO1\T- forming part. of Letters Patent No. 794,777, dated July 18, 1905.
Appiioiiiioii ined April 1, 1904. serial No. 201,097.
To all zul/,mit it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY C. BUNNELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Westport, in the county of Essex and the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is a chair of the bungalow type adapted for use on porches, lawns, at camps, and also adapted to be converted into an invalids chair. Y
A further object of the invention is to produce a strong durable chair adapted to withstand rough usage and exposure to the weather.
l/Vith these objects in view my invention consists of a chair constructed as hereinafter described, particularly pointed out in the claim, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the chair. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the chair.
In constructing my chair I employ two parallel solid side pieces A, having' a straight under edge or base adapted to rest upon a level floor. The front edge A' consists of a vertical portion adjacent the upper corner and a lower rearwardly-inclined portion. rl`he upper edge A2 slants rearwardly and downwardly, which slant is increased at a point substantially midway the length of the edge A2. These side pieces A have therefore, as will be seen from Fig. l., an irregular-shaped diamond outline. The back B of the chair is also formed in one solid piece and iits in its lower portion between the side pieces A, extending upwardly and rearwardly from the front end of the lower or base edges of the sides A to the point midway the length of the edges A2, where the slant of the said edges change, and thence continues in a straight line a considerable distance above the said sides A. The chair is provided with two parallel front legs C, which are secured to the sides A adjacent the vertical portions of the front edges A and extends above them to serve as a support for the arms These arms C are of considerable width at their forward ends and have their inner edges curved, as shown at C2.
i A su pporting-strip C2 is arranged horizontally on the rear face of the chair-back B, extending on each side of same, and supports therear ends of the arms C', the said arms being parallel tothe base or lower edges of the sides A.
The chair-seat l) rests on the forward portion of the edges A2 of the sides of the chair, its rear edge bearing against the back l, and its forward corners are cut out, so that it tits around two sides of each of the legs C. The pitch of the seat I) and the back B is such that the seat is at almost a right angle to the back B, and both are at an angle to the lower base edges of the sides A. A bar Ci connects the legs C adjacent their lower ends, and a foot-rest E is hinged to the bar C", a supporting-piece E being hinged to the front edge of the foot-rest. A board F forms the front wall of a compartment arranged below the seat, the lower edge of the board F meeting the back B adjacent its lower edge and extending upwardly and forwardly to a point adjacent the legs C. To give access to this compartment, I prefer to make the seat D in sections, the section D' being hinged, as shown.
Suitable cushions Gr may be employed on the chair seat and back, as shown in Fig. 1, or on the back only, the seat-cushion being removable, as shown in Fig. 2.
To convert the chair into one adapted for the use of invalids, I provide a base-board H, having beveled side edges and which may be inserted in the compartment below the seat, as shown in Fig. 2, and by raising the hinged section D' of the seat D a supplemental section D2 may be inserted, as also shown in Fig. 2, which section is provided with the circular opening D2. The board H serves as a support for a vessel or receptacle of any desired kind.
From the above description it is thought that the advantages of this construction will be obvious.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A chair comprising solid, parallel, approximately diamond-shaped side pieces, a seat having a cut-out portion resting on the forward portion of the upper edges of they said side IOO pieces, a rearwardly and upwardly inclined above thecompartment formed by the side solid back arranged between the side pieces pieces, back and front board, as and for the IO and along the line of their greatest width and purpose set forth.
extending above same, a front board arranged l 5 between the side pieces having its lower edge HARRY (h BUNNELL' in 4contact with the back and its upper edge I Witnesses: in contact with the seat adjacent the front edge Gr. B. RICHARDS, of the seat, and a hinged section to said seat H. P. SMITH.
