Description

No. 78,334. I PATENTED MAY 26, 1868.- J. SHIMEB. CLAMP FOR HOLDING LEATHER T0 G'UBRIERS BENCHES.
m: was warms co. wumuuwo, WASNWGTON, u. c,
JOHN .SHIMER, OF BR-ONSON, MICHIGAN.
Letters Patent No. 78,334, dated May 26-, 1 868.
IMPROVED CLAMP TOR HOLDING LEATHER TO THE GUERI ERS BENCH.
tithe fitlgr'hnle mantis iu'flnsc gators Quart mu: mating 111M tilts time.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
' Be it known that I, Jenn SIIIMER, of Bronson, in the county of Branch, and State of Michigan, have invented certaininew and useful Improvements in'Clamps for-Holding Leather on a Tanner's and Curriers Bench; and the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to' the accompanying drawings, making a part of this'specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a view of the clamp, showing a simple spring-catch for holding it clamped to leather on a bench;
Figure 2 shows another mode of holding the clamp, with a'ratchet, pawl, lever, and spring, so that it is easily relieved,
Figure 3 showsa broken-oil bench, with a side of leather held on it by the clamp, for manipulating.
The object. of my invention is to supply the great need of something for the use oftanners and curriers, to hold-the skins and leather on their blocks and benches, for manipulating;'-and it consists in a clamp, having right-angle jaws, suflieiently far apart to over and underlap the-block orhench, on one edge on which the hide or leather is placed for working and dressing, the clamp being in the form of tongs, pivoted at a suitable distance from thejaws, with handles of suflicient length for leverage to geta gripe, the tongs being provided with a ratchet or spring-catch, so' as to. hold them clamped firmly on to the block or bench, and areas easily liberated for changing their-position. v
To enable others to make and use my invention, I 'will describe it more fully, referring to the drawings, and the letters marked thereon.
The clamp may be inzideot' wrought or malleable. iron, in 'the general .l'orm of a pair of pincers;- the handles or lever portion, A A, being of-any desired length, and secured togetherlhya bolt or rivet, a, leaving the jaws B Bextendi ng'out beyond a suificient distance to'adrnit of opening, for the adjusting the clamp on the block or bench and the leather. The portion of the jaws Zibis set apart the width of the thickness of'the bench or block, and is bent at right angles, so as to overlap a few inches on the under side of the bench C,
and the side or piece of leather placed upon the top to be manipulated, On one of the lever-handles, A, is
secured a spring, d,'to operate for relieving the jaws, and also a notched spring, D, which forms a rack-catch on the other lever-handle, A, to hold the gripe of the jaws Z1?) en the bench C and leather E.- The catch D extends out beyond the bar suflicient to be acted upon bythe thumb to relieve the catch and liberate the clamp.
Another mode of'holding-mechanismis shown-in fig. 2, whiclreonsists of placing a stirrup or rack-ban F, on the clamp, and for'wurdof tbe pivot a; of oncof thcjan's, and a pawhf, with a handle and spring e to hold it in the notches i i i, pivoted to theothcr jaw,'so that when the clamps are brought to hear on the hideor leather IE, it is firmly held by the-pawlf catching in the notches z' z' t on the bar F.
What I claim as my invenction, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The clanip-pinc'ers B 'B, as constructed, having a spring-catch,-D, for holding them, and the hide or leather E on the bench O or block, for manipulating, substantially as herein described.
2. I claim the stirrupor rack-bar F and'lever-pawlf when applied to clamps, for tanners' and eurriers use, substantially as set. forth.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name, All the presence of- JOHN SHIMER.
Witnesses:
