IMPRDVEMENT IN- FURNAGES FOR BOILING AND PUDDLING'IBON AND THR METALS. 'n
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: A
Be it known that I, JonNZIMMEn, of the city of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny, and State of'Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement inA Furnaces for Boiling and Paddling Iron and other Metals; and I hereby declare that the' following is a full, clear, and exact description of my invention,` reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this Vspecification;and to the letters of reference marked thereon. 4 The nature f myinvention consists in forming the chamber or basin of paddling-furnaces with waterspaces or boshe's' therein, and lso' connecting said lbos'hes' with an elevated tank or reservoir, bymeansof supply andreturn-pipes, as that the same water used for keeping the basin cool inaybe returnedto the tank, and employedcontinually without wastcexcept such as may pass off by evaporation or as steam. A
To enable others tounderstand, make, and put in operation myninventiomIA-'will proceed to doscri'beits i ,construction by reference to the' annexed drawings, wherein- Y Figure represents a longitudinal vertical section of a paddling-furnace' provided with my improvements. Figure 2 repnescnts a transverse longitudinal section of the furnace and basin.` Figure 3 is a .front elevation o the furnace, showing theppes and end view of the water-tank or reservoir. A.ll the parts-are'lettered, and similar letters indicate like parts in the several views.V i
In moet paddling-furnaces heretofore constructed, the basin or chamber, wherein the metal is brought to its proper condition for working, is a mere'ca'sbiron shell, lined with rire-brick, o'r other refractory substance, inlaid with'pulverizediron ore, German clay, -and water, incorporated with-other ingredients, and denominated iix to lenable it to withstand the `intense heat towhich it m'ust necessarilv be subeeted; and as allthis s Y y .l
requires-constant attention, continual` repair, attended witlrloss of time, and, as' a consequence, money,'-I have attempted, audmy invention isfdesigned, to obviatethose disadvantages. With this `ri'ew, -I construct my furnace' in any'of the well-known forms, and with-the usual appliances and appendages` incident to' such furnaces. But, vordex'fto overcome the diicnlties'hereinbefore mentioned, I make the vbasirier paddling-chamber' C of cest iron, and-of one or'more pieces, the sides, S, of which are castwith a hollowpace"o1`- water bosh," B,
therein, and'extending along the centre' of each casting, in the manner indicated bytheotted lines in iig. 1 2,
thev ends being closed to prei'ent leakage 'of water or steam, at the upper side; end :near the Ven dof each piece, and communicating with the interioro'r bosh B," is a round hole or opening, X',to "each lof whieh'l attachant upright pipe long enough to rea-ch `a short distance'above the top, A, of the furnace,' and-'where'theyall temif nate in n largo water-tank, F.' The pipes, L, at'one'endof each bosh, B, just pass throughthe bottom of this tank, whileV the other pipes, D, extend up. theloutside, their upper ends being' turned down a short distance to form a spout, Aso asto em'ptyinto the tank from abovcLas see'n at iig. 3.
The operation is Aasfollows: Water being placedY in the tank F, it will ilew down the short pipes L, and fill the'space'or'bosh B in the east-iron'sides of the puddling-ehamber Gfwhen', on a lire being started in `the furnace, the heat will soon. be suicient to generato steam in the bosh, and the pressure will, asitjncreases, cause the water to'pass up the long pipes D and discharge into the tank li' above the furnace, and, atthe sameI time, the water in the tank will rush down the short pipes L into the -hosh-B, .to take the place of that'discharged, thus-keeping up a perfect .and continuous circulation of water around the paddling-chamber, and maintaining' the sides at a proper temperature, so as to avoid' the 'troubles andv diiculties so common in all paddlingurnaees'constructed and worked in the ordinary manner.l
' Having thus brielly stated the nature of my iiivention- .I claim a cast-iron paddling-basin or chamber, having a bosh o1\`waterspn.ce cast therein around its sides, in combination with'anleyated water-tank, and communicating with eachother by means of supply and-outletpipee, lthe whole being constructed, arranged, and operating substantially` as and for the purposes herein set forth;
v i JOHN ZIMMER.
