IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE HAY-FORKS.
die ,Stimuli referat `tu in tina hitters @that mit mating niet tithe time.
.TO ALL WHOM. I'I MAY CONCERN: Y
- Be it known that I,.JOHN MILnoLLaD, '0f New ConcorrL'in-the county of Muskingum, and Stateof Ohio, have invented a new and improved Horse Hay-Fork; and-I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,
and exact description thereof, which will enable others'skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference bein-g had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved horse hay-fork, and 'consists of an adjustment ofthe' trip-cord by means of a trigger and of tho handle, whereby the handle is protected'by the Vside of the eye when the fork is loaded, and the point kept .straight when the fork is to be returned.,.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is aside view of my improved fork when loaded and about to carryits load.
Figure 2 is a front view, the red lines showing the position of the fork whendepositing its load or being returned.
Similar-letters of reference indicate like parts.
A is the shaft of the fork, to which the prong a is hinged, 'as shown in the drawing,.fig. 1. Bis the sliding rod fitting into the foi-hand secured by the pivot o r pin b. V
The handle C -falls (when the fork is loaded) below the eye D, which serves to protect it from a blow, which lmight throw open the fork and discharge the load. IThe handle Cls connected with theislidinghar bythe arms'E E, which are free to turn ou the pivots or pins e e', by which they are secured to the handle and siding secured to the stud e b the in c on which theV 'move as a ivot.
.Y P i Y P bar.` The handle terminates in two' arms, which embrace thestud c, (firmly attached to the shaft A,) and are F'j' is a trigger, in form of a bent lever, havingiits fulcrum on the'pivot or. pin e, 4".lhe trip-cord X is attached to thqend of Athe arm o`f the trigger, and passes over the stud c through a hole in the shaft A.
To work the fork, plaeeit in the position d', fig. 2, press it into the hay, and lower the handle, whereby the fork is drawn up into the position a, The load is raised'in place, the trigger pulled upon by the cord X, thereby pressing the nrmf against the shaft A, and slightly raising the handle C, when the weight of the load forces the 'fork open, and the load is discharged, and the fork returned in the position a', avoiding all risk of its catching in the hay and dragging it from its place of deposit, as o'ftcn happens with the ordinary'forks now in use.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The construction and arrangement of the handle C, 'connected with the sliding barB bythe armE turning On the pivots 'c c', the lower ends of said handle pivoted to the stud c upon the bar A, the bent'trigge'r Ffpivf oted'upon the pin e of' the bars E andhandlc C, allV operating as described, for thepurpose specified I JOHN MILHOLLANn Witnesses:
JOSEPH L. IRWIN, H. A. IRWIN.
