SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 789,666, dated May 9, 1905.
Application filed January 5, 1905. Serial No. 239,818.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES W. PATTERSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cutler, in the county of Washington and State of Ohio, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Trolleys; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention as applied. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, partly in section. Fig. 4 is a detail view.
The invention relates to trolleys; and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings the letter a designates the head of the trolley-pole, having the arms 6, which have bearings c for the pivot 03 of the trolley-wheel 0. The arms 6 are made broad from front to rear to form the checks f, which are provided with inside shoulders g at about the axial level of the pivot bolt or shaft. Below the shoulders these checks are made sufficiently distant from each other to receive the trolley- Wheel and the lower or pivotal ends of guard-arms h, which extend upright, or nearly so. Above the shoulders the checks are farther apart in order to provide for the movements of the springs 76, which are connected to said guard-arms and to said checks.
The guard-arms it are pivoted on the pivotbolt (Z of the trolley-wheel and are located one on each side of the trolley-wheel and are held normally in upright position by means of lateral normally upright springs in, the lower ends of which are secured in perforations or bearings m of the checks and the upper ends of which are fastened to the guard-arms, as at 72 These springs, which are usually of coil form, work in the lateral Ways w, provided between the shanks of the guard-arms and the checks of the head above the shoulders. Suitable Washers 25 are provided on the pivot-bolt at the side of the guard-arms.
The upper portions of the guardarms extend above the upper marginal edges of the trolley-wheel and are provided each with a lower bearing-flange 2 at about the height of said upper marginal edges of the trolley-wheel and with an upper bearing-flange 3 vertically above said lower flange. These flanges are perforated for the reception of the ends of the pivot or shaft 4, which carries an upright roller 5. The two rollers 5 are laterally disposed, each extending above the marginal edge of the trolley-wheel on its own side and having its inside surface in the plane thereof, so that if the trolley-wheel should become disengaged and fall below the trolley-wire the latter will get between the parallel rollers 5, which will guide the trolley-wheel into engagement with said wire. Should friction of the wire carry one of the guard-arms backward, it will resume its original upright position at once when the friction is relieved, being caused to do so by means of its lateral spring in, which is free to move in the lateral way 10 above the inside shoulder of the check of the trolley-head. These guard-arms are designed to act in the manner indicated whether the trolley-wheel is running forward or backward, and as the guide-rollers are parallel to each other they do not hold the trolley-wire, but operate as roller-guides.
Having described the invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
In a trolley, the trolley-pole head having the inside shouldered bearing-arms, a front shaft, a trolley-wheel lateral guard-arms pivoted on said shaft, parallel upright guide-rollers pivoted to said guard-arms, and having their inner surfaces above and in the planes of the marginal edges of said trolley-wheel, and upright lateral springs connected to said bearing-arms and said guard-arms, and adapted to move pivotally backward or forward above the shoulders of said bearing-arms, substantially as specified.
