PATENTED MAY 9, 1905. A. WYSS.
CHIMNEY TOP APPLICATION FILED 001'. so, 1903.

ALFRED NVYSS, OF SOLOTHURN, SWVITZERLAND.
Cl-llWINEY- TOF,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 789,400, dated May 9, 1905.
Application filed October 30, 1903. Serial No.1'79,22'7.
To all wit/2711, it 7nct7 concern.-
Be it known that I, ALFRED VVYss, a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, residing in Solothurn, in the canton of Solothurn, Republic of Switzerland, (whose post-oliice address is No. 250 Dornacherstrasse, Solothurm) have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney-Tops; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
I have applied for patents in the following countries: In Switzerland on November 5, 1902; in Germany on December S, 1902; in Austria on April 27, 1903; in France on May 30, 1903.
Chimney tops or cowls in the shape of spirals decreasing in diameter toward the top are known.
According to this invention the spiral is constructed in such a manner that the different turns the more they approach the top the more they form an angle more and more steep with the center line.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical View, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section.
The cowl consists in turns a b 0 (Z, which are assembled at the head in a point or cone. The four turns a Z) 0 (Z are hung upon a bolt 0 of the frame f.
]L is a conical cap set on the turns and soldered thereon.
As the frame is not new, it will not be described in detail. Toward the top each of the turns forms with the center line an angle more and more steep, and the width of the different turns is decreased. The result of this construction that the current of air striking upon the cowl produces a helicoidal movement of the ascending column of smoke in the interior of the chimney-top, whereby a suction in the chimney is efiected. By the fact that toward the top the turns have larger passageo1')enings and diminish in diameter the current of air produces a more rapid rotation of the column of smoke in the upper part than in the lower part of the cowl, whereby the sucking action is considerably increased.
The number of the turns may vary, and the chimney top or cowl can be constructed of any suitable metal.
What I claim is An improved chimney top or cowl in the shape of a spiral decreasing in diameter toward the top, characterized by different turns which toward the top decrease in width and form with the center line an angle more and more steep, whereby the space between the turns is increased near the top so that the sucking action is considerably increased.
[n testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 20th day of October, 1903.
ALFRED W YSS. Witnesses:
