APPARATUS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF GELATIN PICTURES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 787,663, dated April 18, 1905. Application filed May 3, 1904. Serial No, 206,190.
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that we, PAUL CHARLES and STEPHAN FAUJAT, merchants, residing at 17 Ludwigstrasse, Frankfort-on-the-Main, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for the Production of Gelatin Pictures, of which the following is a specification.
Apparatuses for the mechanical production of gelatin pictures have been produced characterized by the fact that the molds covered with liquid and colored gelatin act, together with a counter-pressure plate smooth on its whole surface and non-flexible in the direction of its width, in such a manner that the pressure-plate presses the excess of gelatin from the relief-molds, simultaneously bringing the paper or other printing material into close contact with the residue of the gelatin forming the picture and holding it in its position until the gelatin is congealed. Also apparatus has been produced which comprises a support for the relief-mold, said support being arranged upon springs and being vertically adjustable by means of lateral bars, which support may be moved on the under side of a solid counter-pressure plate having a plane and smooth surface in such a manner that the counter-pressure plate removes the excess of gelatin from the mold while the paper or other material to be printed comes into intimate contact with the gelatin color and is held in this position until the remaining gelatin color of the relief-mold is congealed. The gelatin pictures produced according to the above-described apparatuses are particularly suitable, on account of the exceeding transparence of'the gelatin color, for the production of polychrome-printing. It is, however, not possible to produce polychromeprinting by means of the machines described in the said apparatuses. In order to insure that the separate impressions shall cover each other in polychrome-printing, it is necessary that the paper should always be applied at the same place and that it must remain very accurately in its place after having been pressed on the form. The motion of the long counter -pressure plate composed of laterallysloped metal plates in the first-described apparatus is a rocking one. Also when rolling up in the level position a stretching of the endless band takes place. On account of these disadvantages it was necessary to considerably moistenthe paper. On account of the expansion of the paper, however, this is not possible with polychrome-printing. In the second-described apparatus the paper is subdisadvantages are obviated by the following arrangements: In order to avoid all friction of the paper against the counter-pressure plate, the paper is pressed against the printing-form by means of a roller, and the uniform pressu re upon the paper after the impression is effected by a light system of rollers. With such employment of a printing-cylinder the possibility is at the same time afforded to insure the accurate superposition of the several impressions with polychrome-printing. The first roller, which constitutes the impression-cylinder, is for this purpose provided with the known arrangement of gripping devices.
WGWIll describe the invention with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a longitudinal section of the machine. and Fig. 2 a cross-section.
For efiecting the impression the printingform a is placed upon the adjusting-screws 0, carried by the sliding plate 6, the form being adjusted to the correct height by means of the said set-screws. The sliding plate b, which runs upon rollers on its under side,
bears with the rollers upon the metal angular guide-plates (Z. The sheet to be printed upon, whether of paper, metal foil, or the like, is in the first instance brought from the tablef to the grippers g of the impressioncyllnder it, so as to be held thereby in the usual manner. The grippers areherein shown in their swung-back or open position. When the crank-handle i is rotated, the sliding plate 6, together With the printing-form a, is drawn oyer the guides d by means of the toothed pinions Z? gearing with the toothed racks k. At the same time the impression-cylinder h is rotated by means of the toothed wheels and racks Z and Z and the sheet after its front edge has come into contact with the printingform and has been released by the grippers is uniformly pressed upon the printing-form during the continued motion of the latter.
The cylinder in rolling with pressure over the sheet presses the excess of the liq uid-gelatin color from the printing-form,. and the rollers it hold the paper tightly upon the gelatin remaining in the recesses of the form until it has solidified. After the gelatin has hardened the sheet, together with the gelatin picture adhering thereto, is raised manually off the form after the pressure-plate has been moved below the cylinders from right to left. (See Fig. 1.) The sliding plate, together with the printing-form, is then brought back into the starting position.
In polychromeprinting the pictures are dried after each impression, are coated with lac, and are again passed through the machine, taking care to accurately maintain the correct position.
When using a sheet that on account of its flexibility remains tightly adhering to the printing-form after the lmPIQSSiOH RS, for instance, sheets of wax-paper, thin sheets of tin and lead foil, or foil generally, &c.the
pressurerollers 71 can under the circumstances be omitted. The metal foil can for this purpose be coated with white paint, silvered or gilt, or the pictures can be transferred from the wax-paper or metal foil, which in this case must be greased, onto the paper according to the known method.
In the drawing Fig. 1 the sliding plate, with the printing-form, is shown in the position after having passed under the impressioncylinder b.
What we claim as our invention is-- -1. In apparatus for the production of gela tin pictures, a roller h adapted to remove the excess of the gelatin color from the printingform, and a plurality of rollers h serving to exert pressure upon the gelatin color remaining in the cavities of the printing-form and upon the paper sheet adhering thereto during the hardening of the gelatin color, substantially as described.
2. In apparatus for the production of gelatin pictures, a roller 7i adapted to remove the excess of the gelatin color from the printingform, and a plurality of rollers 7L serving to exert pressure upon the gelatin color remaining in the cavities of the printing-form and upon the paper sheet adhering thereto during the hardening of the gelatin color, said rollers it being adapted to be removed when the apparatus is used for printing upon flexible sheets of material impervious to moisture, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
