SPECIFICATION forming .part of Letters Patent No. 787,627, dated April 18, 1905.
Application filed March 24, 1903. Serial No. 149,303.
To all whom. it m/Lty concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY LIrPoLD, a citizen oi the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Valves, of which the following is a speci- Iication.
This invention relates to valves; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction thereof, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
The objects of the invention are Yto provide a valve in which the valve-disk may be renewed while the valve is under pressure and also, preferably, one in which the valve-seat may be renewed while the valve is under pressure. This purpose is best fulfilled where the valve is arranged to permit of the removal of the valve-disk or valve-seat when the valve is under pressure from both directions, and in the preferred form of the invention herein shown it is so arranged.
A further object oi' the invention is to provide an improved valve-disk mechanism, as will appear more fully in the specification.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, as follows:
Figure 1 shows a central section through the valve; Fig. 2, a similar section of the valve-disk, enlarged; Fig. 3, a section on the line 3 3 in Fig. 2.
A marks the valve-chamber, and, for convenience of description we will term the side A as the inlet-passage and the part A2 as the outlet-passage. These are separated by the usual diaphragm a. lA secondary valve-ring B is screwed into an opening in the diaphragm and the primary valve-seat C screwed into the valve-seat B. A packing c is provided between the ring B and seat C to preventleakage. The seat() is provided with the V-shaped contact portion c'and also with the`lugs c2, by which it may be engaged to screw it into or out ot' the ring B. The primary valve-disk D has a groove (Z3, which engages the V-shaped contact portion c' to form a closure of the valve. The disk has the annular shoulder d, which is screw-threaded. This annular shoulder provides a socket into which the head e of the valve-stern E is placed..
The socket formed has the segmental notches cZ, in which the segmental lugs e are placed. A nut Vis screwed into the annular shoulder d and prevents the withdrawal of the head e from the socket. The nut Z2 is not brought down into contact with the head e, so that the disk D is free to move on the head, but is locked against rotating thereon. The purpose of this freedom of movement of the disk is that it may find its place on the seat and still be turned with the stem, so as to shear otf any matter that may lodge upon the seat.
The opening to the valve-chamber is screwthreaded at a', and the secondary hollow valve Fis arranged in this opening and arranged to operate upon the screw-thread. It is provided With an annular groove f, which, is adapted to engage the V-shaped Contact portion b on the ring B. `It will readily be seen that by screwing the valve E into contact with the seat b-a closure is effected against the outlet-passage A2 and that the valve D and seat C may be removed through the opening in the valve. This peculiarity of construction is shown in my former patent, No. 671, 971, dated April 16, 1901. At the upper end ot' the valve F is a shoulder on which is an annular rib f', which is adapted to engage the packing material a, arranged in the annular shoulder' a2. This simply makes a more complete closure than with the screw in the openp ing a'. A cap G is screwed into the shoulder a2, and the nut H is secured on the valve F by the nut f3. The Valve F may be turned to and from its seat by operating the nut H. The nut H extends through the gland g and can be actuated from without the case Gr. The stem E has the screw-thread e2, which operates in the nut H in the usual manner of globevalves. The usual hand-wheel E is provided for operating the stem E. The stem E extends through the usual gland h2. The operation of this part of the valve is thoroughly described in the patent referred to and may be briefly indicated as follows: When it is desired to remove the valve-disk and valve-seat, the valve F is screwed down to its seat by the nut H. The case Gr is then removed and the nut f3 removed. This permits the removal of the nut H, stem E, and valve-disk D. The
valve-seat C is then exposed and may be readily removed. In order to cut ofi the iiow from the passage A during such a removal, I provide the valve I. rIhis valve is arranged to act upon a contact portion on the ring B. It has the lug 7,', which engages a rib c. This prevents the valve from turning as it is moved to and from the seat. The opening in the diaphragm a for the seat B is suiiiciently large for the introduction of the valve I through this opening, so that in assembling the parts it may be introduced through the top of the valve. The valve I is carried by a screw J. The screw J is extended with the stem j, which extends into and fits in the opening j". A gland is provided having the packing material f2. The follower jis arranged on the eX- tension J and locked by the nut jf. The part 7' is provided with head ja, whichds broughty into contact with the inner surface of the valve-chamber through the action of the nut j. The upper end of the screw J is provided with ahead f7, and this head is so proportioned in relation to the head 7'3and the valve-seat that it is brought into close Contact with the valve I when the valve D is brought into engagement with the seat Zi. The stem J has the squared part j, which is preferably of a size that will iit the handle E', so that it may operate by the stem, if desired.
It will readily be observed that when the valve F is brought to its seat and the valve I is brought to its seat the valve-disk D and the valve-seat C may be readily removed, even though the valve be subjected to pressure from both portions.
What I claim as new is-- 1. The combination of a valve-chamber having a passage therein; a primary valve controlling said passage and two secondary valves arranged to close the passage controlled by the primary valveand to permit of the removal of the primary valve during such closure.
2. The combination of a valve-chamber having a passage therein, a valve-seat arranged in said chamber around said passage; the primary yvalve arranged to operate upon said seat; and
two secondary valves arranged to close the passage controlled by the primary valve and to permit of the removal of the primary valve and its seat during such closure.
3. The combination of a valve-chamber; a
primary valve and a secondary valve, one of said valves being hollow and of suiiicientsize to allow the removal or insertion of the other through it; y and a valve arranged opposite said valve and arranged to close the passage controlled by said primary valve.
4. The combination of avalve-chamber having a removable valve-seat therein; a primary valve and secondary valve, one of said valves being hollow and of sufiicient size to allow the removal or insertion of the other and its valveseat through it; and a valve arranged opposite said valves for closing the passage controlled by said primary valve and arranged to permit the removal oi' said primary valve and seat during said closure.
5. The combination of a valve-chamber having a removable valve-seat therein; a primary valve arranged to operate upon said seat; a secondary valve having an opening through'it of suiiicient size to allow the removal of `the valve-seat through said opening; and a third valve arranged opposite said primary and secondary valves and arranged to close the passage controlled by the primary valve during the removal of said seat.
6. The combination of a valve-chamber having the diaphragm a, said diaphragm being provided with an opening; the ring B in said diaphragm; the removable seat C in the ring B; the primary valve operating upon said seat C; and the valve I of a size to permit of its passage through the openingin the diaphragm and arranged to form a closure of the passage controlled by the primary valve.
7. The combination of a valve-chamber having a primary valve; a secondary valve I arranged opposite the primary valve; means for preventing' the rotation of the valve I; the screw J ,having a head 77,- the portion j journaled in the chamber; and the gland comprising the packing f2 and nut j arranged upon the extension J and the extension J on the screw J.
