FIELD LEVELER. APPLICATION FILED APR. 14, 1904.

PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT M. SHANNON, OF BLACKFOOT, IDAHO.
FIELD-LEVELER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 771,580, dated October 4, 1904. Application filed April 14, 1904. Serial No. 203,104. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT M. S ANNON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blackfoot, in the county of Bingham. State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Field-Levelers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to field-levelers; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts, as hereinafter shown and described.
The object of the invention is to provide a field-leveler consisting of a scraper-board attached at right angles to a tongue.
A framework upon which the operator is seated is mounted upon an axle, to the ends of which are journaled wheels in such manner that the said framework may tilt to the front or rear. The scraper-board is pivotally attached to the forward end of said framework, and the framework is provided with a stop which is adapted to engage said scraper-board when the framework is tilted down at its front edge. The tilting of the framework is accomplished by the operator throwing the weight of his body forward or back, and it is obvious that when the forward edge of the framework is elevated the scraper-board is also raised and that when the forward edge of the framework is depressed the scraper-board is made to descend and is held in hard contact with the ground by the stop above referred to.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the leveler. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View of the leveler, showing the scraper-board down; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the leveler, showing the scraper-board elevated. I
The scraper-board 1 is attached to the rear end of the tongue 2 and is held in place by the braces 3 3. Said board 1 extends at right angles to the tongue 2. The handles 4 are attached at their forward ends to the said tongue 2 and extend back over the board 1. The frame 5 is mounted on the axle 6 ,-to the ends of which are journaled the wheels 7. The forward edge of said frame is pivoted, by means of the links 8, to the scraper-board 1. The
operators seat 9 is mounted upon the said frame. 5. The frame 5 is provided with a metal strip 10, which is adjustably attached thereto by means of the bolt 11, which passes through the elongated perforation 12 in the said frame. Said stop 10 is preferably made of sheet metal. and its upper end extends forward substantially at right angles to the intermediate portion thereof, the said upper end being adapted to pass over and engage the upper edge of the board 1 (in a manner as shown in Fig. 2) when the said board is in contactwith the ground. 7 tongue 2 is inserted in a cuff 13, which is provided with a rearwardly-extending flange 14, which passes over the upper edge of the board 1 and down along the rear side of the same for a short distance. The upper end of the stop '10 engages the said flange 14, which thereby preserves the edge of the board 1 from unnecessary wear.
The operation of the device is as follows: The operator is mounted upon the seat 9 and grasps the handles 4.- The implement is drawn over the ground, and when it is necessary to elevate the board 1 the operator throws the Weight of his body to the rear, thus tilting the frame 5 back and elevating the board 1 in a manner as shown in Fig. 3. By thus elevating the said board the earth that has been accumulated thereby is lefton the ground, and the device passes over the same. The operator then throws the weight of his body forward and the parts assume the positions as shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A leveler consisting of a frame supported upon Wheels and adapted to carry an operator, a scraper-board pivotally attached to the forward edge of said frame.
2. A leveler consisting of a frame mounted on wheels and adapted to carry an operator, a scraper-board pivotally attached to the forward edge of said frame, a stop mounted on said frame and adapted to engage said scraperboard. 3. A leveler consisting of a frame mounted The rear end of the upon Wheels and adapted to carry an operator, a scraper-board pivoted to the forward edge of said frame and a tongue attached to said scraper-board.
4. A leveler consisting of a frame mounted upon Wheels and adapted to carry an operator, a scraper-board pivotally attached to the forward edge of said frame, a tongue attached to said scraper-board and handles attached to said tongue and extending back over the scraperboard.
5. A leveler consisting of a frame mounted upon Wheels and adapted to carry an operator, a scraper-board pivotally attached to the forward edge of said frame, a stop adjustably supported by said frame and adapted to engage said scraper-board.
6. A leveler consisting of a frame'mounted upon wheels and adapted to carry an operator, a scraper-board pivotally attaehed to the forward edge of said frame, a stop carried by said frame and having a forwardly-extending upper end adapted to pass over and engage the upper edge of said scraper-board.
In testimony whereof I afitix my signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
ROBT. M. SHANNON.
