JOHN T. DIOKEY AND CARRY D. DERBY, OF BARBERTON, OHIO.
COMBINATION-TILE FOR FLOORS, WALLS, 81.0.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 779,536, dated January 10, 1905.
Application filed August 19, 1903. Serial No. 170,071.
T0 [LZZ whom, it Duty concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN T. DIoKEY and CARRY D. D ERRY, citizens of the United States, and residents of Barberton, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Tiles for Floors, Walls, &c., of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in combination --tiles for floors, walls, decks of boats, &c.; and the objects of our improvements are to attain greater freedom in laying and repairing the component parts of the combination-tile and to produce tiles which can be made highly ornamental by using a variety of colors, and the peculiar configuration of the tile makes many beautiful color combinations possible.
With the above objects in view we have de vised the simple and novel construction of a combination-tile shown upon the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and of which Figure l is a plan view of our combination- Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective views of tiles shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4. is a front view of a star-shaped centerpiece. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of same.
Reference being had to the drawings and the designating characters thereon, D inclicates a tile, preferably made in the form of a square, having in its sides cavities or openings formed which consitute one member of look by which the tiles are connected together, as shown in Fig. 1, and in the center of the tile is a cavity or opening for a star-shaped piece O. The keys A and B as a unit serve to securely lock the tiles together and prevent separation at their joints by expansion or contraction and are removable from the tiles, so that they may readily be displaced at any time that it is desired to take up or remove the tiling.
The tiles being made in separate parts may vary in color. to add to the decorative and ornamental effect of the tiling, which may be made of any suitable material, such as rubber, rubber compound, artificial stone, cement, &c.
Centerpiece O being star-shaped for ornamental purposes has its multiple arms disposed radially, thus equalizing vibration when the tile matting is in use. By constructing the locking-pieces A and B with angular and curved contours a greater area of contact with the tile is established, enabling a better and tighter joint being formed, the locking-pieces being prevented from becoming loose due to the increased area of contact.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim is A tile having an ornamental centerpiece O, having a multiplicity of arms radially disposed to equalize vibration, and locking-keys some of which have curved and some angular contours to provide a great area of contact with said tile and the adjacent tiles, the contour of the locking-keys alternating with each adjacent side of the tile, as and for the purpose described.
Signed at Barberton, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, this 13th day of July, A. D. 1903.
