SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 777,973, dated December 20, 1904.
.Application filed Oetobe'r 10, 1903. Serial No. 176,566.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it lInown that I, EMMA PERLICII, (ne PA- cI-IUR,) a subject of the King of Saxony, residing at Dresden, in the Kingdom of Saxony, German Empire, have invented an Improve- Inent in Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to fastening devices for articles of dress in which two parts are connected togethervin a detachable manner, such articles, for instance, as shoes, gaiters, stays, or gloves.
In carrying out my invention 1 employ flattened helical springs, reinforcing-strips,means by which the corresponding sharp turns of the con volutions of the iiattened helical springs are secured to the edges of the reinforcingstrips, so that the convolutions of one of said springs are adapted to fit into the spaces between the convolutions of the other helical spring, means by which the reinforcing-strips are secured to the edge portions of the parts to be connected together, and a tongue adapted to pass into the convolutions of the helical springs when the same are in their interlocked position to hold the parts together.

The liattened helical springs a are secured to the edges of the reinforcing-strips c, preferably by a lacing el, which passes around the reinforcingstrips and is laced through the sharp turns of the convolutions of the flattened helical springs, the said springs being secured to the edges of the said reinforcing-strips in such positions that the convolutions of one spring are adapted to pass into the spaces e between the convolutions in the other spring. The reinforcing-strips c o are preferably sewed by the stitches ff to the edge portions of the parts g gto be connected together, and when so sewed together these members hold the lacings CZ el in place. I also employ a flat tongue or core provided with a wedge shaped point adapted to be passed into the convolutions of the said springs when the same are in their interlocked position to hold the parts together.
It will be readily understood that in the structure hereinbefore described the flattened portion of the helical springs not only provides a maximum bearing-surface, but also forms a pocket in which the tongue cannot move, and hence cannot readily become displaced, and that with the iiattened structure of the spring the insertion of the tongue tends to draw the parts together, also that with the employment of the reinforcing-strips the bearingsurface of the helical springs is brought substantially into the same plane as the inner surfaces of the parts to be connected together.
I claim as my inventionl. A fastening device comprising flattened helical springs, reinforcing-strips, means for securing the said springs to the edges of the reinforcing-strips so that the convolutions of one of the said flattened helical springs are adapted to tit into the spaces between the convolutions in the other helical spring, means whereby the said reinforcing-strips are secured to the edge portions of the parts to be connected and a tongue adapted to pass into the convolutions of the said helical springs when the same are in their intel-locked position.
2. A fastening device, comprising iiattenedv helical springs, reinforcing-strips sewed to the edge portions of the parts to be connected, lacings passing around the said reinforcingstrips and through the sharp turns in the convolutions of the said flattened helical springs to secure the said springs to the said reinforcing-strips in such positions that the convolutions of one spring are adapted to be passed into the spaces between the convolutions in the other spring, and a tongue adapted to be passed into the convolutions of the said springs when the same are in their interlocled position.
