IMPROVEMENT IN POLISHING-MAGHINES.
@the ,Stimuli mam in in ilpsr tetters nteat aan nmiimg @anni tige time.
T0 ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN STAGKHOUSE, o'f West Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny, and State 'of Penn# Sylvania, have invented a new and improved Polishirig-lldachine;` and I do herehydeclare that the following 'is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the arthto make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. I
This invention relates to a new and improved machine for polishing steel rolls, and for polishing rolls, bars, andirods of other metals, and of a round form; and the invention consists in providing revolving cylinders, and also guides, between which the article to be polished is passed, as will be hereinafter` more fully described.
Figure 1 represents an end elevation of the machine, showing the position of the revolving and polishingcylinders; representing also the article to be polished, in red color.
yligure 2 is a side elevation, showing the cylinders, and the shafts to which they are attached.
Eigure 3 is a vertical Sectionthrough the line :v fr, showing the gearing by which the cylinders are driven.
Similar lettersv of' reference indicate corresponding parts.
This machine is supported by a suitable frame, which is attached toa platform.
The frame may be made of either wood or metal, and of convenientferm.
Y A A represent the frame or head-blocks, which support the cylinders.
B is'the'platform.
The frame consists mainly of two head-blocks for the support of the cylinders, and-pillow-block for thesupport ofthe shafts and gearing. I
C Q represent the cylinders.
D D are the shafts, which are attached to the cylinders.
E represents the driving-gear wheel.
F F are the driving-pinion, on the shafts D D.
'G Gr represent the pillow-blocks, whichsupport the back ends of the shafts and the gearing.
H represents a guide, at the front end ofthe machine, .where the article to be polished is introduced.
J J. represent the outerjou'rnals of the cylinder. l
Upon each side of the frame or head-blocks A A', there are guides I I, which extend inward under the cylinders, and approach each other near enough to be guides upon each side oi' theroll, so as to keep it in place, and parallel with the cylinders, while 4it is in contact with them andbeing polished.
The outer edge ofone of these guides is'seen in'the` drawing.`
The shafts D D are `coupled to the cylinders, as seen in the drawing.
K K represent the back journals of the cylinders, and L L the couplings.
The article to be'polished is passed in between the cylinders endwise at H, and is carried through between the cylinders, being trued and polished as it is revolved byithem.
The roll or article to be polished is seen in red between the cylinders in fig. 1.
After passing through the' machine, it is 'delivered on to avgioovedhorizontal plate, which lies between the shaftsD D, and is marked lm. l v
Thejurnals of the upper cylinder' are secured in boxes,- which rest upon spiral springs, seen at n n, in the front end ofthe machine; similar springs being under the boxes at the other end.
o represents press-screws, which pass through the caps of the head-blocks, and bear upon the upper box, holding the cylinder' C down to its work with a force which resists the tension of the springs, more or less, as may be desired.
It' the springs are sufficient tobear up the Weight of the cylimler,l the pressure on the article to' be polished may be as nicely adjusted bythe screws as may be desir-red.
The power to -revolve the cylinders is applied to the shaft of the driving-wheel, which is marked P.
R is a;crank on that shaft, by which the machine may be operated by hand, if desired.
Thismneliine is designed for giving a. cold polish to all kinds ofv round metallic rods, rolls, or bars, from the diameter of a half inch to live inches, as muy be' desired; but I do not confine my self, in the use of the machine, exclusively to cold metallic rolls, rods, bars, .or other articles.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, -and desire to Secure by Letters Patent- 1'. The guide H forintroducing the metal tobe polishedV in n linev parallel to the axial lines of the rollers C C', the guides I I for holding said metal longitudinally between said rollers, und tlie guide m for' receivingv thepolishedmetal in the line'of` its passageA from between the rolls, as herein described, for the purpose specified.
` 2. Thegudes H, Liand m, in combination with the polishing-rolls` C C and head-blocks' A A', substaptinlly asescribed, for tlie purpose specified.
. JOHN STACKHOUSE.
