scoor TROWEL.
APPLICATION FILED D30. 11, 1903 10 MODEL.
. Patented June 14, 1904.
CHARLES F. HA'WKSVVORTH, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
SCOOP-TROWE'L.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 762,307, dated. June 14, 1904, Application filed December 11, 1903. Serial No. 184,753. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. HAWKS- WORTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Scoop-Trowels, of which improvement the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved scooptrowel; and it consists in forming the same with a flange extending along a portion of one edge and the back, together with certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved scoop-trowel, the same being constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is aside elevation of the same. 7
To put my invention in practical form, and thereby provide a trowel capable of containing a greater quantity of mortar, concrete, &c., I form from sheet-steel the body portion 1, triangular in form, having a point 2 at its forward end and a rounded back. This body portion 1 is formed with a flange 3, extending from a short distance from the point 2 along one edge and around the back, as will be seen by reference to Fig. 1 of the drawings. Connected by means of rivets 6 to the rear portion of the flange 3 is a flanged shank 5 and that portion 4 secured in a handle 8, fitted with a ferrule 7 in a manner well known in the art. This handle is located at one side of the center of the trowel-blade 1, being somewhat closer to the rear flange 3 than the cutting edge opposite, the purpose of which is to balance the weight in the trowel evenly, as a greater portion of the material will accumulate on that side.
This scoop-trowel, constructed as above described, will be found useful when large quantities of material are to be handled by masons or bricklayer-s, as the flange 3 will retain the same at the back and rear, the flange being arranged in such manner as not to interfere with the proper use of the trowel.
Slight modifications and changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the same. Therefore I do not wish to confine myself to that shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The herein-described scoop-trowel, consisting of a body portion having an integral flange extending along a portion of one edge and the back thereof, and fitted with a suitable shank and handle, the said shank and handle being arranged at one side of the center of the blade or body portion of the trowel, as and for the purpose described.
2. The herein-described scoop-trowel, consisting of the body portion or blade 1, the integral flange 3 extending along a portion of one edge and the back, the shank 4:, having a flanged part 5 and means for attaching the same to the flange 3, and a handle 8 attached to said shank, all arranged and combined for service, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. A scoop-trowel consisting of a body portion having a flange along the side and back thereof, with a handle carried by the flange to one side of the center of the body portion.
4:. A trowel comprising a body portion having a flange and a handle, the handle being arranged to one side of the center of the body portion.
5. A scoop-trowel comprising a body having upturned portions, and a handle arranged to one side of the center of the body.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES F. HAIVKSVVORTH.
In presence of- ROBERT R. LOWRY, M. E. HARRISON.
