TO ALL WHOM I'l MAY CONCER.:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. ARNUM, o he city of? lparismoi' Orleans, and Saeof .iousiana, have :invented a certain new, useful, and improred device for 'fasten together, when the same areapplied to the banding of eott'ouror other bales; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description oi',k the same, reference being had to the annexed drawiings, making a part of this specification, in which the device is shown as when inadeofcast or malleable iron and of plate wrought iron, and also as when fastening the ends of a band, and as when'disconnected therefrom.
The particular' object that it is designed to accomplish by my invention, is to take up the slack of `the bands before the ends ofthe bands are fastened, and thus to prevent the expansion of the bale after it has been taken from the compressing-machine, and to preserve its shape or proportions, as tue same has been imparted to it by such machine. But the further advantage is also attained of preserving the bands for further and continued use, by the employment of my device, because, in taking them olf the bale, there is no need either to cut, untwist, or untie them, and hence they are not injured or shortened, and may therefore .be applied to a new bale, as often as they are taken oit one, until they are finally worn out by continued use. I consider the device as presenting its best form, however, when -1nade as shown at iigs. l and 2, and of cast or malleable iron, and only exhibit tig. 3 to the ends of wire rope nud wire demonstrate that it can be made of wrought iron.
When the balehas reached its destination, and is to be broken up, any proper instrument or lever may be inserted underneath the device to overturn it, and unwind the bands, so as to preserve thc-.n without cutting, or if this be found too dilicult, in view of the great tension upon the hands the device may be readily broken by the blow of a hammer, and the band be thus released without injury to it.
My device is simple and clica-p, and et' such easy application that no instruciiin is needed for its use.
What I claim, and desire tu secure by Letters Patent is, as a new und useful article oi' manufacture- The combination of the bars A A', when provided with the notches t (N, with the cylinder B, or its equivalent, as shown at iig. 3, substantially as herein described for the purpose set forth.
