PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM BUSH, OF JACKSON, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO DAVID G. JONES, OF JACKSON, MICHIGAN.
. SKIRT.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 761,200, dated May 31, 1904. Application filed December 29, 1903. Serial No. 186,968. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BUSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jackson, in the county of Jackson and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Skirts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to dress-skirts, and is designed to provide a construction whereby the skirt may be adjusted or varied at the waist and hips to fit persons of different sizes, and has for its particular object to provide an improved device of the kind characterized by facility of adjustment and simplicity of parts.
In the accompanying drawings, in which the invention is illustrated, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the top part of a skirt with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional view; and Fig. 3 is an inside view, in elevation, of the portions of the skirt adjacent the placket-opening.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 indicates the skirt, and 7 the placket-opening. This opening may be formed at the back or side, and it is immaterial to the construction or operation of my device whether it is formed at the back or side.
8 indicates the waistband of ordinary construction, except that it terminates at the ends in tubular portions, (indicated at 9,) which contain gathering-tapes 10. These tapes are fixed at their inner ends to the waistband at a distance from the placket-opening, as indi at l2,) and a buckle loop or eye 13 is fixed tothe opposite edge by threads, as indicated at 13. The hook 12 engages the eye 13 to fasten the skirt. The buckle portions 12 and 13 of these fastenings receive the ends of the tapes 10, and the said tapes may be adjusted in the buckles and fastened by the prongs placket-opening and adjustably to the tapes in a manner similar to that described above at the waist.
The operation of the device to adjust or vary the waist or hip sizes of the skirt c0nsists in shirring the tubular portions on the tapes, which are then fastened by the buckles, the hook and loop portions of which may then be utilized to fasten the skirt upon the wearer. The buckles serve to hold the skirt at the adjustment set and also to form a fastening device whereby the placket-opening is closed.
This dispenses with the use of separate adj usting and fastening devices and has obvious advantages of simplicity and cheapness.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A skirt having a waistband the end portions of which are tubular, gathering-tapes in said portions and secured at their inner ends to the band, and hook-and-eye buckles fixed to the skirt at the edges of the placket-opening and the ends of said tubular portions, in which buckles the gathering-tapes are respectively adjustable.
2. A skirthaving a placket, upper and lower tubular gathering portions opening adjacent the placket-opening on each side, gatheringtapes in said portions and fixed at their inner ends to the skirt, detachable placket-closure devices fixed to the skirt at the openings of the tubular portions and having adjustable engagement with the tapes.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specificationin the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM BUSH. Witnesses:
