vTO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Beit known that I, G. F. HAMMER, of Uincinnati, in the county of Hamilton, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machine for Smoothing LookingGlass Frames. and other articles with sand-paper; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to malte and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which.-`
Figure 1 is an end view of my improved sand-papering machine.
Figure 2 is a vertical section, taken in the line x'x, fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a detached view of the roller or drum on which the sand-paper is attached.
Figure 4 is a cross-section of the same. a
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to improvements in the construction of a machine l'or rubbing and smoothing the edges of looking-glass and picture-frames of wood, and articles of cabinet-ware of any kind; and consists in placing a drum, on which the sand-paper is attached, upon` tl1e end of a rotating and reciprocating spindle, and also covering the drum with India rubber, to form nn velastic cushion, on which the sand-paper is secured, by gluing or cementing the edges to it in such'mauner that they shall come together flush with each other, und thus form a continuous surfaeeof sandpapcr,'which does its work of rubbing or grinding without interruption.
A A represent framing for supporting the machinery, ofwliich t is a horizontal driving-shaft, connected with any prime mover, and carrying a pulley, B, belted to a long pulley, C, on the vertical spindle I1, that passes up through the bed or table, D, of the machine, and on its upper end carries thc drum E, which is covered with rsand-paper, and is shown enlarged in detached views, figs. 3 and 4. v
On the driving-shaft a is a worm-gear, c, that engages a spur-wheel to the side of the vertical pulley C, and there' carries on its` end a plate-crank, e, connected kby the rod f with a vibratory cross-head, g, one-end of which is connected with therertical spindle l by a rocking step, t, in order to give it a reciprocating motion, while, at the saine time, it revolves, to operate the drum E, for rubbing glassframes and other articles with sand-paper.
The drum E is covered with an India-rubber cushion. le, on which tl the edges s s together flush with the surface.
The elastic cushion c, thus formed on the drum, affords n evenly and nicely, and is far superior, both inexeeution and duz-ability, to the ordinary wedded-cloth cover on the stationary horizontal drums hitherto in use for sand-papering glnss'rames and cabinet-ware.
The great advantage of my improved reciprocating drum consists in the regularity'with which' the sandpaper moves baek and forth upon the frame or other article operated upon, thus rubbingthc edgesevenly, without scorching the wood or wearing'out the smid-paper rapidly. j l
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure'by Letters Patent, is-
The revolving vertical spindle b, drum E, the pulleys B C, beltezl together, in combination with the crosshead g, connecting-rod f, crank c, spur-wheel (Z, and worm-gear c, upon shal't a, alb-arranged to operate as described.
