Description
Patented February 9, 1904.
PATENT OEEICE.
ANDREV MCKENZIE, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
PRESSlNG-BOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 751,674, dated February 9, 1904,
l Application led September 24, 1903. Serial No. 174,482. ,(No model.)
T0 all whom, it may] concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW MCKENZIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pressing-Boards; and I do declare the following' to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the ai't to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in pressing-boards such as are used by tailors in pressing' finished clothing.
The object of the invention is to provide a board of this character by which coats and other articles of clothing may be pressed without interfering with the buttons on the same.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which will be simple in construction, inexpensive, and upon which an article of clothing may be quickly arranged for pressing, the buttons on the same occupying such a position on the board as to be entirely out of the way of the pressing-iron.
lVith these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
' In the accompanying' drawings, Figure 1 is top plan view of the board, showing' in full and broken lines the closed and open position of the parts; and Fig. Q is a cross-sectional view of the same having a section of a garment arranged upon the same in position for pressing'.
Referring more particularly to the drawing's, 1 denotes the board having a base portion 2 and an upper portion, one side 3 of which is ixed to said base and the opposite side A of which is pivotally connected to the base at its inner end, as at 5, said inner pivoted end being rounded, as at 6, to permit the said side 4 to swing' outwardly and inwardly against said iixed side 8. The meeting edges of the two sides 3 and 4L of the upper portion of the board are rabbeted or cut away, as at 7, to form a channel 8 between the said sides and flanges 9 and lO above said channel, which when the pivoted side 4 is swung into engagement with the fixed side closes said channel and forms a smooth ironing-surface of the top of the board, as shown. The edge of the flange 9 on the fixed side 3 of the board is corrugated or has formed therein a series of recesses 13, which are preferably semicircular in shape and extend throughout the length of the channel 8. The outer ends of the flanges 9 and 10 are cut away or rounded, as at 14, to form a flaring space between said ends to enable the swinging member of the same to be more readily opened and to prevent the corners of said ends from catching into the garment when being' arranged upon the board.
Then using the board in pressing a garment in the proximity of the button, the pivoted side piece et is swung out to the position shown in broken lines in Fig. 1 and the garment placed upon the board with the row of buttons arranged in the channel 8, the shanks or the attaching-threads of the same entering the recesses 13, thereby permitting the adjacent edges of the flanges of the two side pieces to meet or come tog'ether and form a smooth surface upon the top of the board, vwhereby the garment may be pressed on a line with the buttons. y
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor detailsv of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacricing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A pressing-board having on its upper side a fixed section and a movable section, pivoted at one end, said sections being rabbeted on their inner opposing edgesto form a channel and provided with coengaginganges overhanging my hand in presence of tWo subscribing Witsaid channel, said iiange of the Xed seotlon nesses.
being provided With a plurality of recesses to clear the Shanks of buttons when the pivoted ANDREW MCKENZIE' 5 section is closed against lche iiXed section, sub- Witnesses:
stantially as described. ELLIS C. BENGARD, Jr.,
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set K. SKELLY.
