Be'it known that I, JERRY P. PETTIT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Neweagle Mills, in the county of Grant and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Holders, of which the following is a specification. V

This invention provides a book-support 0 novel formation, adjustable to different sizes of books, capable of being folded into compact form for carrying or storing when not required for immediate use, and which will be light, present a neat appearance, and of such construction as to be applied to a table, stand, or other article of support.

For a full description-of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had same being taken about on the line X X'of having their pivotal ends broken away.

. The supporting-bar 1 is adapted to be vertically adjusted at its outer end to admit of raising and lowering the book. To prevent possible slipping of wedge 7, it is provided with tooth 8 to make interlockingconnecti'on with one of a series of teeth 9, provided at the lower convenience of operating wedge 7 the latter is provided with-pin 12, which is passed transversely through an opening thereof and projects beyond opposite sides of the wedge, so as to be gripped when moving wedge in or out to effect angular adjustment of supporting-bar 1; Arms 13 have their inner ends overlapped and pivotally connected, preferably by means of clamp-bolt 14, the latter passing through vertical opening'15 in the outer widened end of bar 17 When clampbolt 14: is loosened, arms 13 may be turned with reference to each other and to bar 1, as may be required, either to admit of folding the book-holder into compact form or for adjustment of the arms with reference to bar 1 to obtain any required position of the book. Rests 16 are mounted upon arms 13, so as to slide thereon, and are held in the adjusted position by means of clamp-screws 17. The upper ends of rests 16 are notched or forked, as shown at 18, to receive the lower edge of the covers, thereby preventing displacement of the book when properly applied to the holder. Leaf-holders 19 are likewise fitted to arms 13 and consist of springs of approximately 0 form, having their free ends toothed, as shown at 20, to prevent slipping of the leaves when the book and parts are in proper relation. The leaf-holders 19 are adapted to slide and to turn upon arms 13, the sliding movement admitting of adjusting the leaf-holders to engage with the leaves of the book at any required distance from the fold or back and the turning movement providing for moving the leaf-holders out of the way when it is required to turn the leaves of the book. The ends of the leaf-holders receiving arms 13 are formed into spring-rolls 21, so as to grip arms 13 with sufficient friction to hold them in place against casual displacement.

An adjustable brace connection is applied to the rear endof bar 1 and is provided at its upper end with clamp 22 for engagement with the back of the book, so as to cooperate with rests 16 for holding the book securely in place. This connection is extensible and comprises rods 23 and coupling 2a, the latter consisting of clamp plates having matching grooves 25 in their meeting sides to receive rods 23, and said clamp-plate being secured by means of clamp-screw 26. Clip 27 is applied to the lower end of one of the rods 23 and is adjustably connected to bar 1 by means of clampscrew 28, threaded into a member or fork side of clip 27. Back-clamp 22 is pivotally connected to the upper end of the other rod 23. The connection besides being extensible is adapted to be secured to bar 1 in an adjusted position, thereby providing a variety of adjustments for the parts.

The book, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. l, is supported from the rear at its lower end by means of rest 29 and brace 30, the latter being adjustable upon bar 1 and secured in an adjusted position by clamp-screw 81. The back-rest 29 is curved to conform approximately to the curvature of the back of the book when the latter is open. The proper set to the book may be obtained by moving rest 29 either forward or backward upon bar 1, as will be readily comprehended.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. Inabook-holder, a support, a bar pivoted at one end to the support and provided at its opposite end with book-supporting means, a wedge slidable between the pivotal end of the bar and its support, interlocking teeth formed with the wedge and bar, a pin applied to and projected from opposite sides of the wedge, and aspring for holding the wedge to the bar in an adjusted position, substantially as specifiec 2. In a book-holder, the combination of an approximately horizontal bar provided with means at one end for supporting the lower portion of a book, a clamp for engagement with the backof the book at its upper end, and an extensible brace connection between the said clamp and the opposite endof the said horizontal bar to admit of varying the inclination of the book, substantially as described.

3. In a book-holder, the combination of a supporting-bar provided with means for supporting the lower portion of a book, a backclamp for attachment to the back of the book at its upper end, an extensible connection having said back-clamp pivoted thereto, and means for connecting the extensible connection to the bar at an adjusted position. substantially as specified.

a. In a book-holder, the combination with an approximately horizontal bar provided with means for supporting the lower portion of a book, a back-clamp for attachment to the back of the book at its upper end, companion rods constituting parts of an extensible connection, one of said rods having the backclamp pivoted thereto, a coupling for adjustably connecting said rods, and a clip applied to the lower end of the other rod and adapted to be ad justably connected with the aforementioned bar, substantially as set forth.

5. In a book-holder, and in combination with an approximately horizontal bar provided at one end with means for supporting the lower portion of a book, a clamp for engagement with the upper portion of the book, means for adjustably connecting the clamp with the op-. posite end portion of the bar, and a rest adjustable on the bar for supporting the book between its upper and lower ends, substantially as set forth.
