PATENT OFFICE.
HEATER AND VENTILATOR FOR INCUBATORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 748,538, dated December 29, 1903.
Applicationtied october 9, 1903.
To all whom, it may concern,.-
Be -it known that I, ORLANDO P. SHOE- MAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clay Center, in the county of Clay and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Heater and Ventilator for Incubatore, of which the following is a specification. Y
This invention relates' to an improved heater and ventilator for broeders and incubatcrs whether the same be used indoors or out in any kind of weather.
The invention has for its object to provide a device of this class in which the lamp which is used for heating maybe placed in a removable bottom section of the device, the heat passing upward through series of drums, escaping through a top cap, theopenings in the sides of which are protected-by shields to keep out rain or snow and to prevent the wind from affecting the draft of the lamp when the device is used outdoors.
My invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed, out in the claims. y
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device constructed in accordance with the principles of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 3 3 in Fig. 1.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are indicated by similar numerals of reference.
1 designates a cylinder constructed of sheet metal and provided with a lock-joint 2 of ordinary construction, whereby its edges are connected. Fitted within the said cylinder is a bottom section 3, likewise cylindrical in shape, its edges being connected by a lockjoint 4. This bottom section has a permanent bottom piece 5, and it is provided with perforations 6,7adapted to aline withA corresponding perforations 7 in the cylinder'l near the lower end of the latter. In practice the bottom section 3 is inserted into the lower end of the cylinder 5, where the openings 6 and 7 may be brought into -partial or entire alinement. By imparting to the respective sections a slight twist the lock-joints 2 and 4; will frictionally engage eachother, thereby tendseriai No. 176,417. ein model.)
ing to retain the several parts in adjusted position.` Secured at the upper end of the cylinder 1 is a drum 8, the bottom of which has openings 9 communicating with the interior of the cylindrical drum and from the upper side of which rises a plurality of pipes 10, supporting a second cylindrical drum 11,
the top of which has a hole 12, surrounded by a cylindrical flange 13,0ver which is placed a cap 14, the sides of which are provided with openings 15, covered by means of shields 16, which open downwardly, as shown, so that wind or moisture may not enter through the openings 15. The top of thedrum 1l is also provided with handles 17, by means of which the device may be manipulated and carried from one place to another.
In the operation of the device a lamp of ordinary construction, as indicated at 20, is placed in the bottom section 3, which is next placed in engagement with the cylinder 1 and adjusted in such a manner as to admit the desired amount of draft through the openings 6 and 7 and at the same time cause the two lock-joints to be in frictional engagement, thereby securing the parts of the device together with a degree of safety which enables the entire device to be moved, by x'neans of the handles 17, from one place to another. The air heated by the lamp 20 rises through the drum 8, pipes 10, and drum 1l, which parts of the device are in practice inclosed within or connected with the broeder-chamber in such a manner as to heat the temperature of the same to the desired point. The heated air eventually escapes through the perforations 15 under the shields 16, as will be readily understood.
I have in the foregoing described a simple and preferred construction of my improved heater and ventilator for incubators, brooders, and the like; but I desire to have it understood that I do not necessarily limit myself to the precise construction of parts herein set forth, but reserve the right `to any changes, alterations, and modifications which may be resorted to within the scope of my invention and without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the eficiency of the same.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a device of the class described, a cyl- ICO 3. In a device of the class described,a lampholder comprising a cylindrical cup having openings in the Wall thereof, said wall being provided with a lock-joint and a heater-drumsupporting cylinder having Yperforations adapted to aline with the openings in the wall of the lam p-holder and provided with a lock-joint adapted to frictionally engage that of said lamp-holder.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
ORLANDO P. SHOEMAKER.
