Description

i .MBDHB gebaut @fnf 4ADAM MYERS, 0F VAN YWERTQOHIO.
`Letters .Patent No. 74,576, dated February 18, 1868.A
IMPROVEMENT IN OARRIAGE-JAGK. y
TO ALL WHOM lIT MAYV CONCERN:.
Be it known that I, ADAM MYERS, of Van Wert, in the county of Vail Wert, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Carriagefd'acks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others vskilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The'gure is' a side view of my improved jack, part being broken away to show the construction.
My invention has fo'ryits object to improve the construction of carriage-jacks, so as to make them more convenient anddeiectivo in operation; and it'consists inthe 'combination of an adjustablespring-catch or shoulder with the long armof the jack, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the long arm, B is the short arm, and C is the lever of the jack, allv which are arranged in the ordinary manner, and about thc construction of which' there is nothing new. D is a. plate, attached to that part of the long arm A of the jack upon which the axle ofthe carriage rests when being raised. The lower'part of the plate D is slotted longitudinally, as shown in 4the gure, and itsnpper parthas various holes formed in it et rli`erentlheights, as shown in the drawing. is the spring-catch, which is bent', as shown in the gure, so as to forth nearly a right angle. The end of the upper or short arm e1 of the catch E is so formed asto enter the holes in the 'upper part of the `plate D. Upon .the end of the lower or longerY arm e2 of the catch E is` formed a cross-head, which Yslides up and down within a cavity formed in the arm beneath-the plate I). The elasticity of theA catch E should be sufficient to allow the upper end of the said catch to be sprung out of the v hole in the plate D in which it may be, so that the catch may be slid up or down, to adjust its position'according to the height of the axle of the carriage to bc raised.
The plate Dprevents the arm A from being,r worn by the axle of the 'carriage and by the action of the catch E. If desired, the said plate may be omitted, and the holes andA cavities for the spring-catch E formed in the body ofthe arm A, but I prefer to useA the said plate, as it makes the jack stronger and more-durable.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentl Thecombination of the adjustable spring-catch or shoulder E with the long arm A ofthe' jack, s ubstantially in the manner 'herein shown and described, and for the purpose'sct forth. v
