SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters lPatent 1 \T o. 731,675, dated June 23, 1903. `Application iiled August 27, 1902. Serial No. 121,230. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:-
Beit known that I, GEORGE II. GEYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Straightening T-Bars, Angle-Bars, &c., of which improvements the following is a specification.
The invention described herein relates to certain improvements in machines for straightening Ts and angle-bars, and has for its object a construction whereby the desired llexure or bending of the bar necessary to straighten it can be applied thereto and all parts of the bar rigidly supported as against distortion during such ilexure and bending.
The inventionis hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improved straightening-machine. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view, the upper rolls and their cradles being removed' Figs. 4, 5, 6, and 7 are detail views of the cradles and the rolls carried thereby, and Fig. 8 is a detail illustrating the manner of straightening angle-bars.
In the practice of my invention the frame of the machine consists of a bed-plate 1 and a supporting-housing 2', the parts of the housing being connected transversely by suitable bars 3, as shown in Fig. 1. The bed-plate is provided with suitable guide-ribs 4, forming bearing-surfaces for the cradles carrying the lower rolls, of the cradles consists of a bottom portion and vertical side portions and 5", and as it is preferred that the cradles on each side should be adjusted equally it is preferred that the cradles should be connected. For convenience of construction and erection the cradles are made-independent and areconnected by means of bolts passing through flanges 6, formed on adjacent edges of the sides 5". As clearly shown in Figs. 1, 3, 6, and 7, the cradles are provided with bearings 7 for the journals of thel rolls 8, and lon onel of the journals, preferably the lower one, are secured beveled pinions 9, adapted to intermesh with as hereinafterv described. edect a transverse ilexure of the flange portion of the Ts or one side ofthe angle-bars to straighten'the same, each of the rolls 8 is provided with a collar 8", whichwill bear against the edges of the flanges and impart the necessary transverse ilexure. By reference to Fig. 3 it will be seen that adjacent rolls have their axes at right angles to each other or have oppositc inclinations, so that the shoulders S" on one roll will act in opposition to the corresponding shoulder on the opposite roll. By reference to Fig. 3 it will be seen that bottom portions 5 andside portions 5b of the cradles are suiciently narrow to permit of such portions of the cradles on Ione side to overlap corresponding' portions of the cradles on the 'opposite side of the machine, and that the cradles are so arranged that rolls carried by the cradles on one side will alternate with those on the other side. Provision is made for the adjustment of each of the cradles transversely of the bed of thc machine in opposite directions. A convenient construction to this end consists of a brace-bar12, secured to the housings,and screws 13,passing through the brace-bar and bearing against the cradles. Similar cradles, each provided with bearings for the journals of rolls 14,'are suspended from the horizontal portion of the housing by means of screws 15, which engage undercut grooves in the cradles, lso as to permit a lateral adjustment of the cradles, as hereinaf ter described. The bearings for the rolls are so constructed that the axes of the rolls will be at or approximately at an angle of forty-live degrees with the horizontal plane and the rolls are provided with collars. having faces 16 .and :17 formed at right angles to each other. These faces are adapted to bear upon ICQ the inner faces of the flanges and the side ner--such,for eXample,as that shown,consist ing of screws 18, passing through the bracebars 12, heretofore described, and bearing upon the sides of the cradles. The upper cradles are so supported that the rolls 14 alternate with each of the lower rolls 8. It will be observed that each of the bearings is4 provided with suitable oil-pockets 19, having outlets therefrom to maintain the journals and bearings in a suitably-lubricated condition, For convenience in construction it is preferred that each of the upper cradles should be formed in sections connected by suitable bolts,as clearly shown in Figs-i and 5.
It will be clearly understood by those skilled in the art that the several parts of the straightening-machine and the faces of the rolls are so constructed and arranged that all portions of the Ts and angle-bars will be supported during the straightening operation and that by the suitable adjustment of the cradles any desired or necessary flexure may be imparted to the Ts and angle-bars in order to bring them into the desired condition.
I claim herein as my invention- 1. In a machine for straightening Ts,`\an gie-bars, &c., a combination of` a series of three or more rolls, each having bearing-faces at an angle to each other, said rolls being arranged to bear on different portions of the article in succession, and means for adjusting said rolls toward and from a common line, substantially as set forth. y
2. In a machine for straightening Ts, angle-bars, &c., the combination of two 4series of lower cradles havingrolls mounted therein, the cradles of one series alternating with those of the other Series; two series of Yupper cradles having rolls mounted therein and alternating with the cradles of the lower series,
and means for adjusting the several cradles, substantially as set forth. 3. In a machine for straightening Ts, an-
.gle-bars,.&c., the. combination of two series gle-bars, Jac., the combination of two series of lower rolls each provided with bearingfaces at right angles to each other, the rolls of on-e series having their axes at or approximately at right angles to the axes of therolls of the other series, upper rolls having bearing-faces at right angles to each other, one or more of the upper rolls having their axes parallel with the axes of the rolls of one of the lower series, and the other upper rolls having their axes parallel or approximately so to the axes vof the rolls of the other lower series, and means for adjusting the several rolls, substantially as set forth.
5. In a machine for straightening Ts, angle-bars, duc., the combination of a housing two series of cradles oppositely mounted in the housings, rolls drawing suitable bearingfaces angularly arranged in the cradles, upper cradles adjustably suspended in the housing, rolls having suitable bearing-faces an gularly arranged in said housing, brace-bars secured to the housing and screws passing through the brace-bars and bearing against the cradles, substantially as set forth.
