Be it knownthat I, Isltanr. L. LANDIS, of the city oi' Lancaster, county of Lancaster, and State of `I E'enn. Sylvania, have invented an Improved Farm-Gate; and I do hereby declare the following to be an exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a. partof this specication. i l

The nature of my .invention consists in an upright spring-lever (attached to the latch of the gate) near the centre of the gate, operated by rope and pulleys, and a cross-rail, set diagonally'across the gate, for the purpose of raising the front part of' the gate.

A A represent four posts; B, the gate, that is attadhed to the centre posts A A by hinges C C, the hinges being bent so as to form an aperture, D, at the bend,to fit on to a staple, E, in the hind post A. A Wooden block, F, 'ts into the centre of the hinge, to stay the hinge, and strengthen its position between the rails G and Gand uprights H H, at therear end of the gate,.by means of bolts, JJ, passing through the uprights H, rails G, and hinge C. Allthe rails G of the gate operate on pivot-bolts at their rear ends. K is an upright lever, on the one side of the gate, near its centre, operating on a pivot, L, at its lower end, braced .by a clip, M, and having a ilat spring, N, to throw the lever forward, that is attached to the latch P- at R, to close or-shilt the latch,` by .which .means the latch is self-acting, to fasten the gate when closed. At the upper end of the lever K the rope S is fastened, and passes around the pulleys T on the top rail of the gate, and.

extends on each side to the arms U U, on ,the outer posts A A, over"'pulleys V V, with a handle, WW, at each end, when, by pulling at either handle, W W, the lever K draws back the latch, and the gate is drawn back by the rope, and opened or closed at either side, the latch catching into the groove or either of the posts. rail operating as a lever, X, works on a pivot, Y, at the lower end, and a clip, Z, at the upper cali, on the upper rail 'Gef the gate, and as the upper end of the rail'X (which rests diagonally across the gate) is raised, the front end of the gate is raised to any required height, and is held in its position by a pin, passing through apertures in the toprail-G. The gate isthus adjusted fromv six inches to tivo feet in height in front, so as to allow poultry or pigs to Ipass under, or to open and close free of' snow in the winter.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i i 1. The upright lever K, its spring N, clip M, and latch P, .when arranged, combined, and .operated by thc rope S and pulleys T, as hereindescribed, and for the purposes set forth.

3. I also claiin the diagonal rail X, with its clip Z, when combined and operated with the upper rail G of the gate, as herein described, and for the purposes set forth.
