PATENT OFFICE.
JENNINGS GRANT AMBROSE, or HOUSTON, TEXAS.
HEADlNG-HOLDER ATTACHMENT FOR TYPE-WRITERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Iatent No. 739,277, datedSeptember 22, 1903.
Application filed Tune 13, 1903. iderial No. 161,335. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JENNINGS GRANT AM- BROSE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Houston, in the county of Harris and State type-writing machines, and is especially directed to an attachment for use in the preparation of bills or the like to facilitate thework of tabulating, and has for its objects to produce a device of this character which will be simple of construction, efficient in operation, one which will carry a plurality of headings and may be readily operated to bring any one of the headings into action, and one in which the attachment may be readily removed and applied, thus permitting the rapid'interchanging from one holder to another in'changing from one class of Work to another.
To these ends the invention comprises the novel details of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the carriage of-a type-' writing machine having my improved attachmeut applied thereto. Fig. 2'is a perspective view of the attachment removed and showing the parts disassembled.- Fig. 3 is a detail see- Fig. 4: is a crosssection through the body of the attachment. Fig. 5 is a view in elevation of the headings removed from the holder.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the carriage of a type-writing machine which has applied to its front rail the usual scale 2, se-
cured in place by means of screws. These parts may be of the usual construction, as they constitute no part of my invention.
My invention consists in a holder 3, which is removably secured to the machine in a manner presently describedand c0nstitutes,in effeet, a supplemental scale for facilitating accurate spacing in tabular work. This holder is preferably of triangular form and is composed of three metal plates 40f a length equal to the length of the usual type-writer scale and each having its longitudinal edges bent inward to form longitudinal flanges 5. The plates are assembled by soldering or otherwise uniting them at the points of contact throughout their length when brought back to back in triangular disposition. By this arrangement the device presentsthree faces, to each of which is applied a scale or indicator consisting of a printed heading out from the bill or like form which is being used in the machine and inserting said strip into, .the holder with its edges engaged beneaththe longitudinal fianges'5, the three strips or headings'employed in the present instance being represented in Fig. 5.
The-holder 3 is rotatable for bringing any one of its sides into active position to present the heading carried thereby to the view of the operator. In order to permit the ready rotation of the holder, I provide the same at'opposite ends with pintles 6 7, which are journaled, respectively, in bearingsjcarried by arms or clips 8 9. The arms or clips are secured to the carriage of the machine'by the screws which attach thereto the usual scale, the only difference in the parts residing in the fact that in the presentinstance I employ for the attachment of clip 9 athumb-screw, which permits of the clip being readily removed by hand forthe purpose which will presently appear. The clip 8 has associated therewith in any suitable manner, but preferably by soldering or brazing, a leaf-spring 10, .which extends through a slot 11 in the bearing of pintle 6 and bears upon the latter, which has its surface at this point provided with angular faces 1 upon which the spring presses, thus holding the holder against accidental rotation, but at the same time permitting of its being rotated by hand to bring any one of its faces to view,-as above explained.
In order to permit ready removal of the holder 3 for interchanging from one holder to another, I form the holder at its ends with longitudinally-disposed sockets of triangular or other polygonal form in cross-section, in 5 which are seated the inner ends of the'pintle s, which are of course of similar form incrosssection and which are held frictionally in the sockets and are readily removable therefrom, the pintle 7 being comparatively short to permit of its more ready removal from its socket.
By this arrangement when it is desired to change from one holder to another the thumbscrew is removed, releasing clip 9, thus per mitting the pintle 7 being withdrawn from the holder. The'holder is then removed from the other pintle and a second holder placed in position upon the pintles, as will be readily understood. l
Attention is here directed to the fact that the clips 8 9 have their upper portions just above the point of attachment with the carriage bent outward at an angle, thus obviatin g interference of the holder with the platen and enabling the operator to more readily grasp the holder for rotating the same.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I produce a device which is very simple of construction, one which may be readily applied to the machine, and one which in practice will efficiently perform its functionsand materially facilitate the tabulation of bills or the like, and in attaining these ends I do not limit myself to the precise details herein shown, inasmuch as minor changes in the form, proportion, and manner of assemblage of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A device of the class described comprising a rotatable holder carrying a plurality of headings, pintles associated with the holder, attaching-clips in which the pintles are journaled, one of said clips being slotted and the adjacent pintle provided with angular faces, and a spring associated with the slotted clip, extending through the slot therein and engaging the angular faces on the pintle.
2. A device of the class described comprising a rotatable holder carrying a plurality of headings, and provided with longitudinallydisposed sockets of polygonal form in crosssection, pintles of similar form in cross-section removably mounted in the sockets and provided beyond the ends of the holder with cylindrical portions, attaching-clips having bearings receiving the cylindrical portions of the pintles, andmeans for removably attaching the clips to a type-writer.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JENNINGS GRANT AMBROSE.
