Be it known that I, HIRAM H. BOYCE, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and. State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pulleys, of

In the construction shown the rim 1 of the i pulley is formed of two sections 3, separable.
along the line 45. Each of the rim-sections 3 has rigidly secured therein a gripping -block 5, provided with a concave grippingsurface 6, adapted to engage a shaft. Each of the gripping-blocks 5 is provided with a slot7,-
extending entirely through same. A yoke 8 is seated in each of the slots 7. The yokes 8 are exactly alike in structure, one end 9 of each being forked, as will be seen in Fig. 2, and adapted to engage the adjacent end 10 of the other yoke. The adjoining ends of the in a channel 13, which extends transversely across the middle part offlthe gripping-block 5 on the side which is opposite to the grippingsurface 6 of such block. The smaller end of each of the wedges 12 terminates in a threaded shank 14., which passes through a bearing piece and has mounted thereon a nut 16. The bearing-piece extends along the sides of the wedge 12, so as to bearupon the adjacent part of the yoke 8. The bearingpiece 15 avoids the necessity of having a deep channel 13 in the block 5 in order to get sufficient bearing-surface for the nut 16.
r The operation of the device shown is as follows: When the pulley is to be applied to the shaft, the yokes 8 are seated in the slots 7 of their respective gripping-blocks,and the wedges 12, together with the bearing-pieces 15 and the nut 16, are loosely assembled in erted at the middle part ofthe grippingblocks and directly over the center of the gripping-surfaces 6. The pulley may be readily removed from the shaft by simply loosening the wedges 12 and withdrawing the pins 11.
It will be seen thatsome of the details of the construction shown may be altered without departing fromthe spirit of my invention. I therefore do not confine myself to the claims.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A pulley, comprising a rim; a pair of blocks secured within the rim, and having opposite gripping-surfaces for a shaft, one of the blocks having a slot extending through same on each side of its gripping-surface; a binding member seated in said slots having a part extending through said slotted block at each side of said gripping-surfaceand secured to the other block; an adjustable wedge extending transversely of said binding member, said wedge bearing between said binding member and said slotted block, and having a threaded shank extending transversely of the web of the pulley; and a nut on'said such details except as hereinafter limited inshank adapted to draw said wedge between said binding member and said slotted block and thereby draw said blocks toward each other, substantially as described.
2. A pulley, comprising a pair of separable rimsections; a block secured within each of said rim-sections and having a gripping-surface adapted to grip a shaft, one of said blocks having therein a channel for a Wedge extending across same in a direction substantially parallel to the axis of said rim; a wedge seated in said channel and having a threaded shank at one end of same; a yoke passing over said wedge and having a part extending along said block at each side of said gripping-surface means for removably securing said yoke to the other of said blocks; and a nut on said shank adapted to cause said wedge to bear between said yoke and said first block and thereby draw said blocks toward each other, substantially as described.
3. A pulley, comprising a pair of separable rim-sections; a block secured within each of said rim-sections and having a grippin -surface adapted togrip a shaft, one of said blocks having therein a channel for a wedge extending across same in a direction substantially parallel to the axis of said rim and having a slot extending through same transversely of said axis; a wedge seatedin said channel and having a threaded shank at one end of same; a yoke seated in said slot, passing over said wedge and havinga part extending along said block at each side of said gripping-surface; means for removably securing said yoke to the other of said blocks; and a nut on said shank adapted to cause said wedge to bear between said yoke and said first block and thereby draw said blocks toward each other, substantially as described.
4. A pulley, comprising a pair of separable rim-sections; a block secured within" each of said rim-sections and having a gripping-surface for a shaft; there being slots extending through said blocks on each side of said gripping-surfaces; a pair of wedges one mounted on each of said blocks and each having a threaded shank disposed transversely of the web of the pulley; a pair of yokes, one passing over each'of said wedges, and each having a part extending through the slots in its corresponding block at each side of said gripping-surface; means for readily connecting the adjacent ends of said yokes; and nuts mounted on said threaded shanks and adapted to cause said wedges to bear'between their respective blocks and yokes for drawing said blocks toward each other, substantially as described.
5. A pulley comprising a pair of separable rim-sections; a block secured within each of said rim-sections and having a gripping-surface for a shaft; there being slots extending through said blocks on each side of said gripping-surfaces a pair of wedges, one mounted on each of said blocks and each having a threaded shank disposed transversely of the web of the pulley; a pair of yokes, one passing over each of said wedges, and each having a part extending through the slots in its corresponding block at each side of said gripping-surface removable'pins for readily connecting the adjacent ends of said yokes; and nuts "mounted on said threaded shanks and adapted to cause said wedges to bear between their respective blocks and yokes for drawing said blocks toward each other, substantially as described.
6. A pulley, comprising a rim; a pair of blocks secured within the rim, and having opposite gripping-surfaces for a shaft, one of the blocks having a slot extending through same on each side of its gripping-surface; a yoke seated in said slots having a part extending through said slotted block at each side of said gripping-surface and secured to the other block; an adjustable wedge extending transversely of said binding member, said wedge bearing between said binding member and said slotted block, and having a threaded shank extending transversely of the web of the pulley; a nut on said shank adapted to draw said wedge between said binding member and said slotted block'and thereby draw said blocks toward each other; and a bearing piece extending along said wedge and acting'between the nut and said yoke, substantially as described.
