TO ALL WHOM IT MAY OONCERN:
'Be it known thatA I, THOMAS Garanten, have invented a new and improved Twine-Holder and full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference of this specification, in which- Figure 1` is a View oi' my improved twine-cutter combined with the knob of a drawer. Figure 2 is an elevation and section of my improved twine-holder and cutter combined. v Similar letters indicate corresponding parts in all the ignres. My invention consists in ecmbinng with a cutting-blade a surrounding spiral shield, of wire or other suitable material, in such a manner that while one or anumber of pieces of twinemay pcssbetween the convolu'- ions of the wire shield to the edge of the cutting-blade, and besevered, the shield will prevent the blade from coming in contact with and injuring the hand; also, of a metallic shell for containing a ball of twine, and a spring-clamp so arranged therein as to hold the ball of twine stationary while the twine unwinds from its centre. In the drawings, a is the cutting-blade, and n is the spiral shield surrounding the same, and it will readily be seen that a thickness et' twine may readily pass between the convolutions of the wire shield, and be eut by the blade a, but that at the same time the said shield excludes all other objects from contact with the cuttingblade, except4 such as may pass between the convolntions of the wire in lik of the city and county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, Cutter; and I do hereby declare that the following is a being had to the accompanying drawings, making part In tig. I, the blade andshield form the shank of a drawer-knob, which is sccuredin the drawer by means of' a screw, t, forming. part of the cutting-blade, and when the parts are thus combined, the cutter is held in a favorable position to out twine which may be contained in the drawer, and yet the cutting-blade is sufficiently 't from cutting the fingers in seizing the knob in thelusual way to open the protected by the shield to prevent i In iig. 2, the said cutter is mounted on the top of a enst-iron shel1,`II, resembling somewhat-a. bell in forni, and open at the bottom and broad at the base, so that it may sit firmly on the counter or table while the twine is being i rawn therefrom. The ball of twine is held firmly within the shell by means of a spring-clamp, 71 of wire, sc formed as to partially surround the ball, and press it against the inside of the shell. The wire`is b ent spirally near the two ends, at ff, and secured by the two ends in the top of the shell by passing through hotes pierced in the upper part of the shell, and clinehing the same upon the outside.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of a cutting-blade with a. spiral convolutedshield, constructed substantially as and for the purpose specified.
I also claim the spring-clamp,
tinlly :is specified.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set m in combination with the metallic shell for holding the ball of twine, substany hand, this ninth day of February, A. D. 1866.
