Be it known that I, CHARLES ADAM HART- MANN, of the city of 'Vashington, District of lolumbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Temporary Binders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. My invention relates to temporary binders for loose leaves or sheets, and has for its object to provide a simple and efficient mechanism for clamping or securing the leaves or sheets within the cover, which mechanism may be quickly released to permit leaves to be removed or inserted and the binder correspondingly contracted or expanded at will, and which mechanism may be operated to quickly release all of the leaves and permit the eral leaves or sheets of an account-book, the

cover being partly broken away to show the construction of the parts. Fig. 2 is a trans' verse section through the binder, showing the several parts in locked relation. Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view showingV the ar- -rangement of the clamping-plates, the retaining-posts, and the locking-latch. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the rear portion of a sin-` gle loose sheet, showing the arrangement of the recesses which engage the postsin the binder. Fig. 5 `is a longitudinal section through one of the retaining-posts, illustrating the construction whereby the same is adjusted.

Referring to the drawings, the. numerals l l represent the covers .ofthe book or binder, which are preferably united by a back l to form an integral structure. It is desirable that the back should be quite flexible and of sufficient fullness to readily accommodate itself to varying thicknesses of leaves or sheets which are retained between the covers, and to this end the back .is preferably constructed of flexible material of somewhat" less thickness than the covers.

Secured to one end of the covers is a clamping-plate 3, which is preferably inclosed within the body of the cover. Securely attached to said cover, and preferably between the.

outer portion thereof and the plate 3, are two retaining-posts 4 4, each of which consists of a threadedsocket 4', having a head 42 and a coperating screw 5 having a fiat head 5', said socket and screw constituting a longitudinally-adjustable post. Upon the other cover and in parallel relation to the plate 3 is mounted a second clamping-plate 6, whichis provided with circularoriices t" 6, registering with the posts 4 4 and of sufficient size to permit the heads 5 of the screws 5 to pass .freely through them. Centrally disposed upon plate and pivoted thereto by a suitable stud 7 is a locking-latch 7, provided with two oppositely-extending notches 72, which are adapted to embrace the Shanks of the screws o 5 under the heads thereof, thereby locking the covers securely upon the loose leaves or `sheets forming the contents thereof.

In order to facilitate the insertion or removal of the sheets or leaves, I provide the latter with two recesses 2 2 in their rear edges, which are preferably of uniform Width and register withl the posts 4 4 when in proper position for binding.

To apply the binder to its intended use, a number of loose sheets 2, provided with recesses 2 2', are laid upon the lower cover in such a position'that the posts 4 4 occupy the correspond-ing recesses in thel sheets. 1 The upper cover is then folded over parallel with the lower until the heads of the screws 5 5 pass through the openings in the upper cover and the plate (j. The latch 7 is then swung upon its pivot until the recesses in thc end thereof engage the screws 5 5 lunder the heads thereof, after which the screws are turned down in their respective sockets until the leaves are clamped with sufficient pressure between the covers to insure their retention in the binder. Should it be found necessary to remove one or more leaves, the latch 7 is swung out of locking position and the upper cover thereby released, after which any of the leaves may be removed as desired, when the upper cover is again swung into place and the latch caused to engage the project- Vcient retainer ing heads of the screws 5. Should it be found necessary to add additional sheets to the book, it is only necessary to back the screws 5 5 out of the threaded sockets 4 4c a sufficient distance to accommodate the additional thickness of the leaves, after which the latch 7 is released, as before, the upper cover swung back, and the new leaves slipped into place, with their notches engaging the posts.

It is to be particularly noted that in applyingl additional leaves to the book or removing leaves therefrom no lateral adjustment of the retaining-posts is necessary, as the recesses 2 in the back edges of the leaves pass freely over the posts at all times. Furthermore, in order to remove one or more leaves from the middle of the book it is not necessary to first remove all the leaves above the one to be removed, as any leal' may be slipped from between its fellows as soon as the pressure on the cover is removed by swinging the latch 7 out of operative position. The particular form and character of the slots 2 2, in thel loose leaves is of particular advantage in connection with binders of this character, as by their use any sheet of the desired size may be bound into the volume by cutting recesses at the proper points along one edge, which may be accomplished by a simple cutting instrument, such as a knife or a pair of j shears, and therefore does not require special perforating-tools, as is generally the case in binders heretofore in use, wherein the sheets were provided with slots 0f varying' crosssection.

' It is to be noted that the binder, as above described, not only affords an efficient means for adjusting the covers to the sizeof the contents, but also affords a particularly effifor loose sheets or leaves whose aggregate thickness is not variable, but'which sheets or leaves are moved 0r shifted about among themselves. Under the latter conditions the posts -l et need not be adjusted for length, but by simply releasing the latch 7 the clamping effect of the upper and engaging; the projecting posts to lock the covers upon the contents thereof.

2. A temporary binder, comprising covers, longitudinally-adjusted. posts secured to one of said covers and projecting through the other cover, and a latch comprising a bar having notches in the opposite ends thereof pivoted to said latter cover and engaging the projecting posts to lock the covers upon thc contents thereof.

3. A temporary binder, comprising covers, adjustable posts secured to one of said covers and projecting through the other cover, each of said posts comprising a threaded socket and a cooperating headed screw, and a latch comprising a bar having notches in the opposite ends thereof pivoted to said latter cover and engaging the projecting posts to lock the covers upon the contents thereof.

4. The combination, with a number of leaves provided with recesses, of uniform cross-section of a temporary binder for said leaves, said binder comprising covers, posts engaging the recesses of the leaves, said posts being secured to one of said covers and projecting through the other cover, and a latch pivoted to said latter cover and engaging the projecting posts to lock the covers uponthe leaves.

5. The combination, with a number of leaves provided with recesses of uniform cross-section in 011e edge thereof, of a temporary binder for said leaves, said binder comprising covers, longitudinally adjustable posts engaging the recesses in the leaves, said posts consisting of male and female screwsections secured to one cover and projecting through the other cover, and a latch pivoted to said latter cover and engaging the projecting posts to lock the covers upon the leaves.

G. The combination, with a number of leaves provided with recesses of uniform cross-section in one edge thereof, of a temporary binder for said leaves, said binder comprising covers, clamping-plates carried by each cover, longitudinally-adjustable posts secured to one of said clamping-plates and projecting through the other plate and the corresponding cover, a latch pivoted to said latter plate and engaging the projecting posts to lock the covers on the leaves.
