To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that LWILLIAM B. MAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of 0010- rado, have invented a new and useful Miter- Box, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in miter-boxes in which an adjustable angleguide operates in conjunction with a rectangular base, a U -shaped steel-spring sawguide clamp, and a common hand or back saw; and the objects of my invention or improvement are, first, to provide an accurate andexpeditious means of cutting material for woodworking at any angle desired and without the aid of bevel or try squares; second, to afford by reason of its simplicity, lightness, and compact form a valuable addition to the carpenters and cabinetmakers should er-box; third, to' provide a means whereby woodworking material of any width and thickness may be operated easily and accurately and under conditions in which a larger miter-boxcould not be used; fourth, to providea simpler, cheaper, and much better miter-box than any heretofore made. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is an isometric projection of the entire device attached to a common handsaw. Fig. 2 is a side view of the device with the exception of the adjustable angle-guide. Fig. 3 is a face view of the bottom surface of the base of the device with adjustable angle guide omitted. Fig. 4 is a side view of the adjustable angleguide separated from the base. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the an gle-guide, and Fig. 6 is an end view of the latter.

The base 0, the U-shaped steel spring S, the fixed saw-guide g,- the movable saw-guide g, attached to the free end of said spring, the
adjustable angle-guide G, the bolt 1), and thethumb-nut n constitute the framework of the device. The U shaped springSand the sawguides g g attach the saw to the device and keep it in true cutting-line when in operation, with the angles formed by the adj ustable angle-guide operated by the bolt b, the thumb-nut n, and the dowel-pins p p, which -Serial No. 110,089. (No model.)

When the angleguide G is attached by the bolt passing through the holek in the center of the base O, a right-angled cut is made, or an angle of forty-five degrees may be cut to the right or left. IVhen the angle-guide Gis attached by the bolt 12 passing through the lateral hole 70, an accurate square out can be made.
Any angle whatsoever may be cutby reversing the bolt b in the adjustable angleguide G and attaching it to the base 0 in the hole'lc. In this "case the dowel-pinspp will also be reversed, and they will not engage the countersunk holes before mentioned.
The countersunk holes at z 2, Fig. 4., (indicated by dotted lines,) are for the purpose of attaching the miter-box securely to a bench by screws, if desired, for stability. In Fig. l the saw-guide g is firmly fixed to the base O by screws or other means and strengthened by one or more corner braces or brackets am, also fastened by screws.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a miter-box, the combination with a base having a central perforation and a series of holes surrounding the said perforation, a second perforation in the said base, of an angle-guide having projections upon its tened to the fixed saw-guide g. by screws, the
upper surface, said base being interchangeably mounted in said perforations, the projections of the angle-guide being interchangeably registerable with the holes in the base, an upright fixedly mounted upon one end of the base, and an inverted-U-shaped spring secured to the fixed upright and carrying a member upon its free end disposed opposite the said fixed upright whereby a saw-guide is formed between the two latter elements.
2. In a miter-box, the combination with a base having an upright disposed at one end thereof and depressions in its under surface, of an angle-guide having projections upon its upper surfaco,said base being removab1y,and adjustably mounted upon said angle-guide, the projections of the angle-guide being interchangeably registerable with the said depressions of the base, an inverted-U-shaped spring having one of its ends secured to the said upright and carrying a member at its free end disposed opposite the upright whereby a saw-guide is formed between the two lat-. ter elements.
3. The combination with a base having holes in its under surface, an inverted-U- shaped spring mounted upon the base, a sawguide, and an angle-guide removably, and adjustably connected with the base, said angle-guide carrying projections upon its upper face,said projections engaging the holes in the under surface of the base.
4. In a miter-box, the combination with a base having a central perforation and a series of holes surrounding the perforation, a second perforation in said base, of an angleguide having projections upon its upper surface, said base being interchangeably mounted in said perforations, and a saw-guide connected with the base, the said projections being interchangeably registerable with the holes in the under surface of the base.
