TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: I

Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. PATTON, of the city of Harrisburg, county of Dauphin, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ice-Creepers g an'dI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in'which Figure 1 is a view of the under side of the creeper, and- Figure 2 is a. cross-section of the same.

In gs. 1 and 2, .A represents the body oi' the creep. It consistsof an annular lmetallic disk, having a series of saw-teeth projections formed lupon its outer edge, on its under side, as seen in gsfl and 2. lSaid teeth are designed to catch hold of or embed themselves in the icevvhen the creep is in use. Upon the'under side of the creep there are also formed or provided the ears or projections c c. y -These are intended to retain or hold in place the screw a. Said screw is simply an vordina-rywood-screw, of properlength, the head being removed, andthe portion of its body immediately under the head being flattened, so as to forintwo parallel sides, the flattened body being of such relative thickness tothe distance between the ears c c .as to be easily inserted between them. Said screw is retained ih place bye. rivet, e, passing through it and both ears c c. The disk orplate A is slotted through its body, as seen at b. Said slot is made to allow the screw a to pass through the plate, and be turned at right anglesto it, for the purpose hereinafter shown.

Having thus given a full description of my improved creep, its manner of action is as follows: The screw a being turned at a right angle to the disk A, as seen in fig. 2, the creep is .screwed on to the boot-heel of the wearer, a hole having been formed in said heel for the reception of the screw. If the heel is worn ofi on one side the plate will adjust itself to said worn surface by reason of the pivoted screw permitting an adjusting action of the plate, the serrated edge of the disk or plate catching in the ice and preventing slipping, which is the desideratum to be attained,

There are several advantages obtained by this method of constructing ioe-creepsz First, the peculiarmethod of combining :the attaching-device or screw awith the body of the creep `permits said device to be turned down level with the plate, and thus facilitatel their portability when not in use, as the screw in that position presents no obstruction, and a pair of creeps can be carried in the vost-pocket; again, they can be readily cast of cheap material, (cast iron answering,) and thus be furnished at a low cost to the consumer.

I do not desire to broadly claim the general application of a serratededge to ice-creeps, as that manner of construction has been already in use; but

What I do claim as'new, of my invention, and desire tc secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is- 'lhe peculiar combination of a pivoted or folding screw,` a, with the disk A, constructed and operating substantially as herein.set forth and for the purpose described.-
