ELISHA WALKER AND A. M. WEED, OF LA FORTE, INDIANA.
Letters Patent No. 70,381, dated October 29, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT n1 cunrrvArous.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that we, ELISHA WALKER and A. M. WEED, of La Porte, in the county of La Porto, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cultivators; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view, and
Figure 2 is a side elevation.
Our improvements relate to that class of cultivators in which the ploughs are suspended upon wheels, and v the points on which we have made our improvements on former machines .will appear from the claims hereinafter to be set forth.
In the drawings, A A are the wheels, attached to the beam 13 through the metallic hangers G to which the spindles are attached. The tongue D is fastened to the beam B, (which is the.axle,) and is secured by a circular brace, E, attached to it and the axle. F is a metallic double-tree, attached'uuderneath the tongue, with hooks on each end to secure the whifi'le-trees. Sockets are formed in the double-tree at F, through which bolts pass to secure therein the end of the plough-beams G G. The beams support the standards and shovel-ploughs G, and swing freely both horizontally and vertically within the sockets F, being controlled by the ploughman holding the handles G The near end of the beams G is supported adjust-ably by chains H, and when the cultivator is being moved, while not in use, they may be suspended upon hooks I so that the ploughs shall be above the ground. K is the drivers seat, supported upon two parallel bars K, which, resting upon-the axle B, extend forward along each side of the tongue, and are adjustably held by notches K, which catch upon a metallic strap over the tongue, and projecting on each side thereof, immediately behind the point where the brace E is attached to the tongue. As the seat may be fixed nearer or further from the axle, the weight of the driver may always be made to counterbalance that of the tongue. The hooked foot-pieces L on the ploughbeams G will enable the driver to regulate the movement of the ploughs in passing through the rows of corn.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is
11 The mode of counterbalancing the weight of the tongue by that ofthe driver by means of the seat K resting upon the bars K adjustably secured to the tongue, and supported upon the axle, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the tongue 1), double-tree F, with sockets F and beams G, respectively constructed and arranged substantially as set forth. a
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ELISI-IA WALKER,
A. M. WEED.
