Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE E. LOGKWOOD, OF ST. LoUIs, MISSOURI.
SUMMER-HOUSE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 703,705, dated July 1, 1 902.
' Application filed November 8, 1901. Serial No. 81,548- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE R. LOCKWOOD,- a citizen of the United States,'residing in the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Im-' provements in Summer-Houses, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a summer-house such as is used on the lawns of residences for shelter, the object of the invention being" to provide a structure of the character named with means whereby sun, wind, or rain may be excluded therefrom.
The invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I is a view in elevation ofmy summer-house. Fig. II is a horizontal sectional view taken on line II II, Fig. I. Fig. III is an enlarged sectional view taken through oneof the movable guards of the summer-house and its supports. Fig; IV is a sectional view similar to Fig. III, showing a varied form of the guard and of the supports. Fig. V is a detail sectional view illustrating a swiveltruck with which the guards may be equipped.
1 designates the platform of the summerhouse, surmounted by posts 2, that support a roof 3. On the platform 1 is one or more circular tracks 4, preferably two in number. These tracks are preferably arranged exterior of the posts 2, though one or both of them may be located interior of said posts. The tracks 4 may be of single-rail form, as shown in Figs. II, IV, and V, or they may be of double-rail form, as shown in Fig. III.
5 designates an overhead track-rail of single form suspended from (he roof'3 of the summer-house.
6 designates guards movably mounted so as to be shiftablebn the tracks 4, mounted on the house-platform,for the purpose of providing protection against the entrance of the suns rays, wind, or rain into the house in or- .der that a person occupying the ;.house will not be subjected thereto. The guards 6 may be provided with glass panels7, asseen in Fig. I, lattice-panels 8, as seen in Fig; III, or vmay be of solid form, as shown in Fig. IV. I prefer to utilize two or more guards arranged to travel on individual tracks 4,'so that a greater expanse of protection may be afiorded by positioning the guards in overlapping arrangement, as illustrated-by full and'dotted lines in Fig. 11; but a single guard maybe utilized. to advantage. The guardsare travelingly supported and guided by supporting and guide rollers, which may be of any desirable form. In Figs. I andIV, I have shown supporting-rollers 9 carried by the lower ends of the guards and arranged to travel on the single-rail track 4, the upper end of the guard being upheld and directed by guide-rollers '10, arranged in a double-rail track- 5.v In Fig. III, I'have shown a supporting-roller 9 arranged on the overhead rail 5,and the guideroller 10 arranged in the double-railtrack 4. Where it is desired to provide the greatest ease of movement for the guards, a truck or caster roller 9" (see Fig. V) may be utilized for the support of the guard. I have shown the guard 6 of curved form; but it is evident that they may be fiat in shape, though I prefer the form shown, inasmuch as it' corresponds to the contour of the summer-house and is better adapted'to the association of pairs of guards arranged to overlap each other,
as will be apparent.
I claim as my invention a The combination with an unwalled summer-house having. a platform and roof, of inner and outer circular tracks, on said platform, and a pair of guardsadapted to'travel horizontally and separately on said tracks to partially close the structure, substantially as described.
GEORGE R. LOCKWOOD.
In presence of- 1 E. S. KNIGHT, M. P. SMITH.
