Description

J". M. SvOUT-R-ENON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y; Letters .Patent No.` 70,640, dated Nevember 5,1867.'
'Lillie Stimuli nfmei tuin time Enters stmt zum nmliuig part rf tige snm.
'ro ALL WHOM I1" MAY ooNcERNf Be it known that I, J. M. SOUTRENON, of the city., coun ty, and State of. New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Coverings for Walls of Parlors and Saloons; and I do hereby declare that the 4 following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference vbeing had tothe accompanying drawing, forming part ofV this specification.
The drawing vrepresents the wall o? a. room covered with my improved silk-tissue covering, having a paper or muslin bucking, to strengthen and support the delicate material.
The object of' this improvement is to introduce a new und beautiful covering for the walls of parlors and saloonsby employing for this purpose, instead of wall-paper, a. delicate tissue of gauze fabric of silk, the surface of which is watered like moire antique, or ornamented with figures in` various colors. This fabric is so delicate in its texture thatri't cannot be used for the purpose of covering walls by itself alone; it has not suicient body and strength'without a backing or support, and its beauty would be destroyed by pasting it directly upon the surface of a wall in the manner of attaching wall-paper. In order, therefore, to employ this elegant fabric' for-the decoration of parlors and saloons as a. covering for the walls, I combine with it a backing or lining of paper or muslin, or both, tbc effect of which is to bring o ut the watered and colored figures on its surface, und at the same timegive it the body and strength necessary to render it useful in its application to the purposes aforesaid.
In thevdrawing, theornurnentaIsilk fabric A is shown as attached to a paper or linen backing B, which is pasted upon thewal1'C in the manner of wall-paper. y f
.The thin silk fabric maybe attached to the paper or linen bucking with axpure gum or mucilnge, or by sewing with fine silk threads or floss in such a manner as to -secure it firmly at such points und parts as are necessary for its support.
Having described my invention, what I claim us new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As. an improved article of manufacture, a covering for pnrlor walls, composed of ornamental sill: gauze combined with u backing of peper or other suitable material, as and for the purpose described.
J. M. SOUTRENON.
