HARVEY NEWLIN, OF BROOKLYN, NEYV YORK.
BIB.
SIECIFICATION forming part of Letters Eatent No. 704,206, dated July 8, 1902.
Application filed October '7. 19Q1. Serial No. 77,766. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HARVEY NEWLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bibs, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide a bib of improved construction whereby the same may be quickly and easily connected with and suspended from the neck of a child and will remain in position without hurting or injuring the child until removed; and with this and other objects in View the invention consists in a bib constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same reference characters in each of the views, Figure 1 is a front view of a bib constructed according to myinvention; Fig. 2, a plan view thereof of a. spring-ring which I employ, and Fig. 3 a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention I provide a bib 5, which is of the general form usually employed, the body portion of which is preferably composed of oil-cloth or other similar material, and the entire is also preferably provided with a binding 6, sewed thereto or connected therewith in any desired manner, and the body portion of said bib is also provided with a neck portion 7,in which is formed a central circular opening 8, which opens upwardly or backwardly at 9 through the said neck portion 7.
Placed around the central circular neckopening 7 is an open spring-ring 10, provided at the open side with projecting jaws 11, and this spring-ring 10 is held in place by a hem or tape 12, by which it is inclosed, and said hem or tape also incloses the parallel jaws 11 at the open side of said ring.
The spring-ring 10 is preferably composed of short straight sections, as indicated at 13, and by means of this construction I increase the resiliency of the spring, the separate short straight sections thereof operating to produce this result. Myimproved bib may be quickly and easily sprung. onto the neck of a child at any time and will remain in position as long as desired, the spring-ring 10 serving to hold the bib securely in place without pinching or otherwise injuring the neck of a child, and the parallel jaws 11 at the open side of the ring facilitates the operation thereof and also serve to hold the said spring-ring in place.
The body of the bib 5 is also preferably provided at the bottom thereof with the usual pocket 14, and my invention is not limited to the material of which the bib is made nor to the general shape thereof, and I reserve the right to make all such alterations thereon as come within the'scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A bib comprising a body and neck opening provided with a circular neck-opening which opens outwardly through the neck por= tion by means of a radial slit formed therein, and'a circular open spring contractile ring placed around said neck-opening and held in place by a hem or tape, said ring being pro= vided at theopeuing therein with radial ex tensions which are secured in the opposite sides of said slit substantially as shown and described.
2. A bib provided with a neck portion having a circular neck-opening which opens outwardly through said neck portion by means of a radial slit, and an open spring-ring se cured around the periphery of said circular opening and provided at the open side with parallel radial projections which are secured inthe side portions of said slit, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 4th day of October, 1901.
HARVEY NEWLIN.
