ELEVATORG EAR.
SIPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 693,212, dated February 11, 1902.
Application filed May 28, 1901. Serial No. 62,234. (No model.)
To all whom, t 'may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MARTIN BAIN- BRIDGE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Elkton, in the county of Teller and State of Colorado, have invented a new and nection, although it will be understood that.
theoretically the gear is applicable to elcvators or lifts of anysort.
This specification is a specific description of one form of the invention,while the claims are deinitions of the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is an elevation of the invention with parts in section. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side view of the gear, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged end View thereof.

In Fig. 1, 6 indicates railway-rails which are designed to carry tram-ears raised by the elevator. Mounted at each end of the Hoor 7 of the elevator-cage is a rock-shaft 8, provided with dogs 9. These shafts 8 are adapted to rock to throw the dogs 9 outward, so that they may engage in seats 10, formed in the framing of the shaft 5. This action is shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, and when the dogs 9 are so disposed the elevator-cage will be locked in position. At one end each shaft 8 carries a crank 11, and with these cranks are respectively connected rods 12 and 14. The rod 12 is attached to the lower end of a hand-lever 15, fulcrumed on the floor 7 of the elevatorcage, and the rod 14. is attached to the lever 15 at apoint opposite the side of the fulcrum at which the rod 12 is connected, or, in other words, at a point above the floor of the elevator-cage. A retractile spring 16 is connected to the. cranks 11, and by thisV action the dogs 9 are normally held in vertical or inactive position. By throwing the lever 15 from that indicated by dotted lines in the same gure the action of the rods 12 and 14 will rock the shafts 8, so as to throw outward the dogs 9 and lock the elevator-cage. The upper end of the lever 15 plays in a guide 18, attached 55 to the framing of the elevator-cage, and pivotally connected with the upper end'of the lever above the guide 18 is a handpiece 17 to facilitate the manualoperation of the lever. When inactive, the handpiece drops 6o into the position shownby dotted lines in Fig. 1." Now it will be seen that when the handpiece 17 is releasedthe spring 16 will return the parts to the position shown by full lines in Fig. 1. By throwing the lever 15 con- 65 trary to the action of the spring the parts will lbe thrown into operative position, and when the elevator-cage is at the proper elevation the dogs 9 will engage in the seats 10.
Having thus described my invention, I 7o claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination with an elevator-cage, of dogs pivotally hung thereon, a hand-lever fulcrumed on the cage, arms pivotally connected with the hand-lever at opposite sides of the fulcrum thereof and having connection respectively with the dogs, and a retractile spring extending between the dogs and tending to draw them toward each other into in- 8o active position. The combination with an elevator-cage, of rock-shafts mounted thereon, dogs carried bythe rock-shafts and depending therefrom,- cranks connected with the roek-shafts,a handlever fulcrumed on the elevator-cage,- arms pivotally connected with the hand-lever at i opposite sides of the fulcrum thereof, and a retractile spring connected with the cranks and tending to draw the dogs together,where 9o by to hold them in active position.
