Be it known that we, DANIEL CATcnroLE, of Geneva, in the county of Ontario, and State of New York, and J. HAVENS, of Auburn, in the county of Cayuga, and State aforesaid, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Wood-Bending Apparatus; 4and'wc do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- I Figure 1 is a side elevation of oui machine, showing-the attachment for bending carriage-poles.
Figure 2 is a top or plan view of the same, Showing the attachment for bending thills.
Figure 3 is a detached vertical section of the clamping-former for the'large end of the thills.

The nature of this invention will be better understood by reference to the drawings and specification, and to enable others to make and use it, we will describe its construction and operation.
We provide a suitable frarne,iA, in the top of whichis hung the shaft S of the toothed wheel W, which gears into a pinion upon the shaft E. This shaft hase. pulley, P, by which it may be driven by power, or it may be turned by hand by a crank, if desired. The axial shaft S is made to project someinches from the face of the wheel W, from which there are also two clutch-pins, e. The formers or blocks B are placed upon these pins, and are forced by them to turn with the wheel. The pinion-end of the counter-shaft E is hung in the end ofjthe lever L, which is hinged or has its fulcrum in the brace A. The outer end of this lever rests in the fork in the top of the standard F, and it is locked'in gear by a clamp in the standard. The primary bed D is hinged in the top of the standard J, as shown in iig. 1, which is forked at the top, and is madeabout as wide as the bed. This bed is provided with elevated ribs f, iigs. land 2, between which the sliding bed D moves. The opposite end of the bed D is guidedin its vertical movements between two studs, g. This end is borne upward by means of the weighted bar b, rock-shaft t, and supporting bar le. The connectingrod r is hinged to the adjustable clamp p, which is attached 'to the hinged bed D by the clamping-screw or bolt n, whereby its position may be changed as desired, in order to increase or diminish the upward stroke of the heade, the bar of which is hinged to the short arm of the lever j. It ispivoted to the hanger x, which is rigidly fixed to the sliding frame. There is a clamping-screw, s, and a sliding cross-head, L, attached to the sliding bed D, tig. 1. This bed is grooved to receive the har Z1', the lower end of which is attached to the bod D by a metallic band or spring, z'.
The' sliding frame D is drawn to the right hand from its present position, causing thc connecting-rod r to draw the long arm of the bent lever j up, and the short arm down, and with it the head e. The stick m, which represents a light carriage-pole, is placed through the yoke or cla-mp y, with one end against the lug o', the bar'bei'ng down in the groove in the bed D. The clamp y is thrown over the end of the former-block B, where it is secured by the wedge v. The wheel is thrown into gear, and as it turns thc bend is made over the convex face of the former, and at the same time the bent lever j forces the head e upward, e'ecting that bend in the opposite direction, as shown in iig. 1.A The clamping-jaw z is then slipped on from'the back side, and secured by the wedge u. The clamping-screw is then reversed, which releases the bar or stick m, and the former B, with the bent stick or pole, is removed from the wheel, and another former-block substituted, and the operation repeated.
The sliding bed D is removed, and the bed D, iig. 3, is substituted, for 'bending thills. The bent lever j and its connections are not required with the bed D. There are two cham-faced levers G pivoted to the bed. There is a detachable former, H, placed upon the bed, where it and the two sticks a are firmly held by the clamping-buttons n. The former Ff, iig. ,is attached t'o the stock Q by inserting a pin through thev ear q. There is a metallic band or follower, b, attached to the head or stock Q at one end, and to the sliding bed Dl at the other. The foi-mers are provided with a clutch, c', fig. 3. The rollers R, gs. 1 and 2, are hung to the primary bed, and as the former Q is revolved, producing the bend at the large end of the thills, the sliding bed issdrewn forward, causing the arms of the cams G to swing outward, thus producing the lateral bend at the forward or small endl of the thills. The clamping-dog d, being previously placed in the recesso in the bed were D, ho key r is driven through the eyes of the clamp, thereby securing the thills to this former, und by withdrawing the pin g they may be removed, after lia-ving placed the clamping-dog g in the position shown in 5g. 2, and turning the buttons nto register t the openings in the former, and reversing the driving-wheel. The two formers F and H are also removed with the tliills. The second vertical bend in the cnrringc-polcs may be produced by means of a cam or eccentric upon the lever.
What we claim as our invention', and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The arrangement of the sliding bed D', lever j, rod r, presser-head e, former-block i und its clamps, andthe Wheel W, substantially in the manner and for the purposes s'hown :rnd described.
2. The levers G, former H, rotating head Q, and former F, arranged nnd operating substantially in the manner shown and described, for the purpose of giving the vertical and lateral bends nt the sume time, :is set forth.
3. The arrangement of the levers G, pivoted to the sliding bed D, in combination with the rollers R attached to the bed D, as and for the purposes specified.
