SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 699,757, dated May 13, 1902.
Application filed September 5, 1901. Serial No- 74A35. (No model.)
To (0 whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HOWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at 563 Tenth street, Brooklyn, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Childrens Teething-Nipples, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a childs teethingnipple, and has for its object to provide a holder and handle for blind or false nipples, or nipples that are generally used by teething children, and to so construct the said holder and handle that when the nipple is secured thereto it cannot be accidentally separated from the holder and handle.
A further object of the invention is to so construct a nipple holder and handle of the character above set forth that it will be simple, durable, and inexpensive, and in connection with which ateething-ring maybe used when desired.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved nipple holder and handle, with nipple attached. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section through the nipple, holder, and handle, illustrating the construction and method of securing the parts together. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the handle, showing another mode of construction of holder and handle. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of my invention with a modified form of handle.
A represents the guard, comprising a frustoconical disk preferably curved, as at A, and having an orifice g longitudinally disposed through the center. The walls of the said orifice g are threaded about half-way, as at g. In close proximity to the top or face of the guard A and opening into the orifice g I provide an annular groove a, into which the flange O of the nipple will pass when inserted from the opening in the disk A.
13 represents the handle, which is provided at the connecting end with a tenoniB', integral with the handle, having threads I) about half its length to engage the threaded portion g of the orifice g, and a cylindrical projection or plug 1) of slightly less diameter than the orifice gand of sufficient length to engage and firmly seat the neck of nipple C against the Walls of orifice g; or said handle B may be constructed as shown in Fig. 3, wherein the tenon B is quadrifurcated to form the branches or forks e 6, having flanges or enlarged lips e e to engage the inside walls of the nipple O and press the latter firmly against the mouth of the orifice g, thereby binding the nipple in place.
I provide the handle B with a longitudinal central duct or channel (1, as shown in Fig. 2, to allow the air in the bulb of the nipple, when the nipple is compressed, to freely escape and to thereby allow the nipple to be readily compressed and to freely expand when released.
In assembling the parts of the device the flange of the nipple is passed through the orifice g of the guard A. After the flange of the nipple has been passed through the said orifice in the guard and finds a resting place in the groove (0 the handle 13 is inserted or screwed in the aperture until the plug b engages the interior of the neck of the nipple and presses the latter snugly in place in the opening in the disk or against the face of the guard.
It is evident that after the nipple has been secured in the above manner it cannot be accidentally removed, it being necessary for the handle to be purposely disconnected from the holder before any separation of the parts can ensue.
If desired, the construction may be varied, as shown in Fig. 4c, in which the handle of the tenon or plug is dispensed with, the construction of the plug being otherwise the same as that before described, excepting that the guard A is provided with a ring E, similar to a watch-pendant ring, and, if desired, the handle, nipple, and holder may also be as sembled without using threaded surfaces, substitutingin lieu thereof cement or other adhesive substance.
It will be observed that the construction above set forth is exceedingly simple and but few parts are required, that the various parts may be quickly assembled, and that when necessary a new nipple Without the least difflculty can be perfectly and expeditiously adjusted. Furthermore, it will be seen, as shown in Fig. 2, that the face of the holder is utilized in place of the ordinary fragile washer style guard, thereby affording ample protection from accidental breakage, and also, as shown in Fig. 2, that by reason of the nipples flange resting in a groove on the inside of the holder there are no exterior crevices to secrete or harbor dirt or bacteria or germs.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a guard comprising a centrally-apertured frusto-conical disk, having an annular groove in the wall of said aperture intermediate the base and apex of said disk, a nipple provided on the end of its neck With an annular bead or flange, said neck and flange being respectively fitted in the said aperture and groove, and a handle and holder provided at one end with atenon fitted within the said aperture and the neck of the nipple, and operating to hold said neck and flange to their seats in the disk, said tenon being threaded for a portion of its length and engaging a correspondingly-threaded portion of the Wall of the said aperture, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a guard comprising a centrally-apertured frusto-conical disk, having an annular groove in the wall of said aperture intermediate the ends of the latter, a holder and handle provided at one end with a tenon threaded fora portion of its length and provided With a reduced and unthreaded end, a nipple provided on the end of its neck with an annular head or flange, said neck and flange being respectively fitted in the said aperture and groove, the unthreaded end of the tenon being fitted in the end of said neck and operating to hold the latter and the flange to their seats in the disk, and the threaded portion of said tenon engaginga correspondinglythreaded portion formed in the Wall of the said aperture, said handle and holder being provided with a longitudinal duct or channel extending entirely through the same and through the tenon, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set myhand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM HOWELL.
