T0 ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I, MARTIN J. MELLYN, ofRoXbury, in the county of Norfolk, and State of Massachusetts, haveinvented a.; new and improved Cutting-Bar; and Ldo hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention4 relates to a new and improved device for` cutting off the projecting ends of bolts which are used for fastening tires on to wagon-wheels; and the invention consists in a bar of peculiar form, which is made to support and guide a chisel, and which also forms 'an anvil against or on which thlecutting is done, as will be hereinafter described.
Figure 1 represents a, longitudinal side view ofthe machine, showing the bar and the chisel, and the manner of its application.
` Figure 2 is a longitudinal view of the same from the back side.
Figure 3 is a cross-section of the har at the line :v z.
Similar letters of reference indicate eorrespondingparts.
A represents the bar.l B is 'the chisel. The baris formed with a shoulder, C, which is an anvil for the cutting-chisel. The portion of the bar which rises from the anvil is marked D. At its upper end there is a in place. At the lower or opposite A. difficulty has always been experienced in cutting off the ends of the bolts which protrude through the nuts after the tire has been fastened to the wheel. All devices for this purpose which have been heretofore resorted to have left' a portion of the bolt to be filed oif, making it a tedious and expensive operation. By the use of my machine the bolt`v is cut clean with the nut, (or nearly so,) requiring but a slight touch of the file afterwards'- l This apparatus is also used to great advantage in splitting nuts, and thus removing them in cases where the bolt turns round in the tire and felloe of the Wheel. In ordinary practice it is`dilicult either to split the nut l or cut off the bolt without warring the paint and injuringthe wheel, but with this bar and chisel it is an easy matter. In both cases the bar is held in the hand, with the anvil C against the nut, when a hammer is used upon the chisel, the wheel being in a horizontal position on a bench or stand for the purpose.
Having thus described my invention', I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 'lhe bar A, constructed substantially as shown and described, with the anvil C and socket E, in combination with the chisel B, substantially as and for the purposes hereip set forth and described. i f MARTIN J'. MELLYN.
