IMPROVED SHUTTIt-I'ASTENING.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAIZr CONCERN:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN K. DORWART, of the city of Lancaster, in'theState of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Arrangement for Fastening Shutters; and I do hereby declare that the `following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making apart of thisspeciication, in which` Figure 1 is a perspectiveview of a pair of shutters attached, with my improvement in place.
Figure 2 is the bed-plate A and lugs B, between which the bolt C is held by arpin or pivot.
Figure 3 is a side elevation. l
Figure 4, the top view.
'Figure 5, the `shouldered catch.
Figure v6, the sill-catch. v v
The nature of my invention consists in operating the bolt, that fastens the shutter back against the wall convenient to th'e hand f 'or closing the shutters at night; at thetsamc time the same bolt also locks the shutters on the sill. i
To enable others skilled in the art to make-and use myl invention, which is so clearly shownby the drawings that a brieijiexplanation will sumen.
The bed-plate A has a square or oblong opening, for the end of the holt C 'to pass through, and supports a pair of lugs, B, between which the bolt C is held by a stout pin or pivot. The bolt, as shown, has lever prolongation, with a thumb-trigger, D, on an extended stem, to bring it clear ofthe wood inside, a plate, F, with a slot,f, curved, forming the radius from the pivot in the ings. A There 4is also s.- spring, b, shown under the bolt, to keep itl down. By. forming a raised plane on the plate F the buttorifor thumb-piece D will wedge itself so as to counteract the spring and hold the bolt higher up in the wood than would be required for simply clearing the sill when closing the shutters; but this can be readily managed without such inclined plane en the slotted plate F. The bed-plate A, being the width of the shutter, is let intoI the bottom ilush withi the wood, and/so as to lock it near the outer edge when operi, and thus secure a {iruo hold upon the notched wall-staple H, iig. y5. This is of the ordinary rounded form in front, but I allow a shouldernround the sunken space and sides of the bolt, by -which it can be driven into the wall, by setting a blunt tool vagainst said shoulder, and thus adjust it, at first as well as afterwards, should it become loose. There is no noveltyr in the sill-catch, iig. 6. In a large bolt no spring is required; its own weight would be suiiicient to keep it in place.
I am aware that numerous devices have been invented for fastening shutters, bt I am not aware of any arranged and operating in the manner herein specified and shown.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'lhe curved bolt C, secured within the shutter between lugs B on a base-plate, A, one end of the bolt to pass through an open slot in the bed-plate, and the other end provided with a trigger, D, in combination with the slotted stop-plate F and shouldered wall-staple H, all arranged and operated in the manner and for the purpose specified.
BENJ. K. DORWART.
