OHARLOTTE D. OROUTT, OF BOSTON, MASSAOHUSETTS,ASSIGNOR OF ONE- FOURTI-I TO MARY LOUISE EVERETT, OF CONCORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
FUEL-RECEPTACLE FOR COOKlNG-STOVES.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 685,484, dated October 29, 1901.
Application filed November 10 1900. S l NO- 97- (No 111011811) To a whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLOTTE D. ORCUTT, of Boston, in the county of Suflolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fuel-Receptacles for Cooking-Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a f uel-receptacle which can be applied to and removed from the fire-box of a cooking-stove, and is adapted to hold a relatively small quantity of fuel near the top of the stove, to
the end that the fuel may be economized by maintaining a shallow bed of fuel in close proximity to the top of the stove, the receptacle being removed from the stove when it is desirable to support the fuel on the ordinary grate of the fire-box in the usual way.
The invention consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a fuel-receptacle embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a transverse vertical section of the same, showing it in place in the fire-box of a cookingstove.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in both the figures.
My improved fuel-receptacle is a relatively shallow basket a, formed to be supported in the upper portion of the fire-boxb of a cookstove and provided with feet on its front and rear sides, formed to bear upon portions of the stove adjacent to the fire-box and support the receptacle in the upper portion of the fire-box, so that the fi're will be in relatively close proximity to the top of the stove. The bottom of the receptacle a is composed of bars a, separated by suitable spaces, forming a grate, and the sides are preferably of grated or open-Work form, as shown in the drawings. The horizontal top bar of the rear side of the basket is depressed below the top bar a, of the front side of the basket, so that the rear side of the basket is lower than the front side to permit the products of combustion to pass freely from the receptacle into the flue through which said products are usually conducted from the fire-box over the oven of the stove.
The feet which support the receptacle may be of any suitable construction and arrangement. In the construction 'here shown the rear top bar a is provided with two rearwardly-projeoting feet a a, which are constructed to be horizontally extended or contracted, as clearly shown in Fig. l. The front top bar a is provided with forwardlyprojecting cars a a, with which are engaged vertical rods a 0. to the lower ends of which is secured a footpiece a the latter being vertically adjustable by means of the rods a, which for this purpose maybe screw-threaded and provided with suitable nuts to permit the vertical adjustment of the footpiece a and hold it at any position to which it may be adjusted. The feet 0. in the present instance bear upon the upper'edge of the rear fire-brick lining c, and the foot a bears upon the upper edge of the front fire-bricklining d. The adjustability of the feet a enables the attachment to be adjusted to various widths of fire-box, and the vertical adjustability of the foot (1 adapts said foot to the height of the supporting-shoulder at the front of the firebox whatever may be the distance between said shoulder and the top of the stove.
I do not limit myself to the details of construction here shown .and may variously modify the same without departing from the spirit of my invention.
If desired, the ends of the receptacle may have telescopic or adjustable feet a tobear on projections at the ends of the fire-box, said feet a being designed for use in conjunction with the feet ofiand a when the structure of the stove renders it desirable that such feet a be employed for steadying the receptacle or for any other purpose.
The foot 0. may have adjustable extensions a for use in stoves having unusually-wide fire-boxes.
It will be seen that the structure is such that it may be applied to the fire-box of almost any stove without regard to the size of said fire-box, and this may be done without varya ing the size of the basket-like receptacle. In
other words, the front, end, and rearwalls of the receptacle are integral with the bottom, thus avoiding any possibility of any coming apart of sections and dumping of the fire contained therein, and at the same time the sup ports for the receptacle are adjustable, so as to permit it to rest easily upon the top of the fire-brick lining in such position that the entire structure can be readily removed by lifting after removing" the top of the stove.
I claim- 1. Afuel-receptacle having agrated bottom and provided with horizontally-ad j ustable rear projections extending rearwardly from the rear of the receptacle below the plane of the top of the front thereof, and a verticallyadjustable front support extending forwardly I from the front of the receptacle.
2. A fuel-receptacle havinga grated bottom and provided with horizontallyadjustable rear projections extending rearwardly from the rear of the receptacle below the plane of the top of the front thereof, frontprojections extending forwardly from the front of the receptacle, a footpiece below the said front proj ections, and adjustable connections between said footpiece and the front projections, whereby the distance between the footpiece and the front projections may be Varied.
3. A fuel-receptacle having a grated bottom and provided with horizontallyadjustable projections extending, rearwardly from the rear of the receptacle below the plane of the top of the front thereof, ears extending for wardly from the front of the receptacle, vertical rods adj ustably connected with said ears,
and a footpiece connected with the lower ends of said rods, for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my s1g= nature in presence of two witnesses.
