Be it known that I, NEv-IN BUFFINGTON LE FEVRE, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Littlestown, in the county of Adams and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvement-s in Package- Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains-to make and use the saine.

My invention relates to package and parcel holding devices, and contemplates the provision of a cheap, simple, and durable deviceof the class named and the practical adaptation of such device for use to a luggage-carrier, hand-bag, 0r satchel in such manner that while it is at all times ready for use in holding different articles in close contact with the exterior of such bag or Satchel it is yet when not in use compactly folded and closely held preferably within such luggage-carrier, bag, or satchel, in which position it is shown in the drawings hereto attached.

To the ends above set forth the invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts comprised therein for practice, substantially as is hereinafter described,aud illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a side elevation of a hand-bag or Satchel provided with my invention and shows the same as it'appears from the exterior of the hand-bag when not in use. Fig. 2 is an end view of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a side elevation of a hand-bag or Satchel provided with my invention and having a package held thereagainst by such invention. Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail elevationof a part of my invention connected to a hand-bag or Satchel. Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view of my improved package-holder, taken on the line X X of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a sectional elevation of the strapholding casing, together with the parts that hold the same in position upon a hand-bag. Fig. 8 is a front elevation of a device to hold the package-securing strap at different points of protraction. Fig. 9 is an edge elevation of the part-s shown in Fig. 8. Figs. l0 and 1l represent, respectively, a front and a side elevation of a modiiied form of my invention.

Similar numerals of reference in the several figures of the drawings denote similar parts.

While in the present embodiment of my invention I show a hand-bag or Satchel of the ordinary construction provided with my package-holding device, it will yet be understood that such package-holding device may be applied to luggage carriers other than that named-as, for instance, to telescoping Satchels such as are ordinarily used by traveling salesmen, or even, if so desired, to the sides or lids of trunks.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a hand-bag or satchel which in the present instance I have provided upon one side, at or near the bottom and opposite ends thereof, with plates 2, provided with apertures 3 for the passage of straps 4, each of which is connected at its inner end to a rotatable drum 5, which turns within a casing 6, upon a fixed central stud 7, that extends from side to side of said casing.

I provide the casing 6 upon one side with an aperture 8 for the passage of the strap and at opposite sides of said aperture 8 with fianges 9, which bear upon the inner surface of the Satchel and are apertured at 10 to receive rivets ll, which extend through apertures formed in the plate 2,through the Satchel side, and serve to hold the casing 6 securely in position.

I provide that each of the package-holding straps 4 shall be automatically wound upon its drum 5 and so held when not in use, and

-to such end I provide each drum 5 with a helical spring 12, connecting the opposite ends of said spring to the drum 5 and stud 7, upon which said drum is mounted, in such manner that the outward movement of the strap 4 shall wind the spring upon its stud, while said spring upon the removal of pressure from the strap shall rewind the saine upon its drum, which action will be readily understood by reference to the drawings.

I provide the outer end of each strap 4 with an apertured fitting 13 to engage a hook 14 upon the frame of the Satchel, at the top IOO thereof, when the straps 4 are in use. (See Figs. 3 and 4.)

To accommodate the length of the strap 4 to diierent-sized packages, I provide that such strap may have, when desired, a locking device, whereby it shall be held against movement through the aperture 3 of the plate 2, and to this end I may provide said plate, at the upperside of the aperture 3,with aslightlyprotruding portion l5, against which the strap 4 maybe rmly held at any pointof its movement by a laterally-swinging pawl 16, pivoted upon the lower rivet l1.

The casings 6, within which the packageholding straps are normally held, may each be covered by material secured at the edges to the Satchel, as shown at 17 in Fig. 6.

The operation of the device may be readily understood from the foregoing description.

In Figs. 10 and ll I have shown a modification of my device, hereinbefore described, in which modication I employ a rod or bar which may, if desired, extend from end to end of the satchel and be journaled in the ends thereof or may be made in shorter sections. Upon this rod or bar the packageholding strap may be wound, as shown, and be held normally so wound by a torsionspring that is secured at its opposite ends, re-

spectively, to said rod and to the fitting in which the end of said rod is journaled.

I am aware that it is not new to this art to use package-holding straps that are selfwinding upon spring controlled drums, and I therefore do not broadly claim the same; but

What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination with a hand-bag, Satchel or analogous device, and with a packageholder upon said hand-bag, and comprising a protraotable strap to inclose a package, a casing within said hand-bag to receive said strap of means for positively securing said strap at different points of protraction from its casing, the said means comprising a plate secured to the exterior of the hand-bag opposite the casing therein, an aperture formed through said plate for the passage of the strap, a projecting lip at one side of said aperture, and a pawl pivoted to said plate to impinge upon the strap and force the same against said lip, substantially as described.
