WILLIAM E. SMITH, OF OQUAWKA, ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent .No. 67,078, dated July 23, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN OULTIVATORS.
TO ALL'WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. SMITH, of Oquawka, in the countyof Henderson, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and improved Cultivator; and that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification of the same, wherein I have set forth the nature and principles of my said improvements, by which my invention may be distinguished from all others of a similar class, together with such parts as I claim, and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent.
This invention relates to a new and improved cultivator, of that class which have their ploughs or shares attached or arranged in such a. manner as to be capable of being moved or adjusted both vertically and laterally by a person walking at the rear of the machine. 7
The invention consists in a novel manner of attaching the plough-beams to the axle of the machine, whereby the wear of the coupling is readily compensated for; and the invention further consists in an improved arrangement of bracing, whereby the axle and draught-pole are firmly'stayed and held in position; In the accompanying sheet of drawings v Figure 1 is a side sectional view of a cultivator provided with my improvement, taken in the line xx, fig. 2.
Figure 2, a plan or top view of the same.
Figure 3, an enlarged vertical section of a portion of the same, taken in line y 3 fig. 2.
Figure 4, a horizontal section of fig. 3, taken in the line 2 2.

A represents the axle of the machine, and B B the wheels thereof. This axle is of bent form, the central part a being elevated, forming three sides of a quadrangle, and the ends 6 6 being horizontal, and constituting the arms, or a portion thereof, on which thewheels B are fitted and allowed to turn freely. Q is the draughtpole, the rear part of which is secured to the central elevated part a of the axle, and is braced b y rods 0 c, the
rear ends of which are attached to the parts 6 b of the axle, and the front ends to the draught-pole. By means of these brace-rods the draught-pole and axle are firmly retained in a proper relative position with each other. D D represent two plough-beams, provided each with two standards E E at their rear ends, said standards having the usual shares or ploughs attached; a handle, F, is also attached to the rear end of each beam. The front end of each plough-beam D is connected by a coupling, G, with the parts 6 of the axle. These conplings are composed of two parts at d, placed one over the other, with a suiiicient space between their front ends to receive the parts I) of the axle, a bolt, e, passing vertically through the parts at d of the coupling, and the parts I; b of the axle. Between the rear portions of the parts I) b of the coupling, in their opposite surfaces, there are made transversely grooves to receive a pin,f, which passes through metal ears or plates 9, secured to the sides of the front part of the plough-beam, and through the parts (i def the coupling, near their rear ends, a vertical bolt, 72, passes, to secure said parts firmly to the pin, packing i being interposed between d d, the whole rear portions thereof, as shown in fig. 3, in order to compensate for wear, either of the pinfor the grooves in which it is fitted, packing of diiferent thicknesses being interposed between (1 d as circumstances may require. The pinsfadmit of a vertical adjustment of'the ploughs or shares, and the bolts e admit of a lateral movement or adjustment of the same. The packingt' prevent all unnecessary play of the beams D, admitting of them and the ploughs being retained in proper position,
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new; and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The couplings G, composed of two parts d d, connected by a. vertical bolt, h, and having packing, 2', interposed between them and the pin f and connectedto the axle and plough-beams substantially as and for the purpose set forth- WILLIAM E. SMITH.
