PATENT OFFICE.
NEW YORK, N. Y.
ANlMAL-TPAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 670,449, dated March 26, 1901.
Application filed May 14, 1900.
Serial No- 16,605. NO model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, ISAAC HYMAN, acitizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the countyof New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Thisinvention relates to animal-traps; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is particularly designed for catching rats and other Vermin, a further object being to provide a trap of the class described which is simple in construction and operation and comparatively inexpensive.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved trap; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section through the bottom thereof, and Fig. 3 a side view of a trigger which forms a part of the operative mechanism and its attachments.
In the practice of my invention I provide a trap of the class described having a base A, which is oblong in form and preferably composed of wood and which is provided with a central oblong space a, in the top thereof, which is of the same form as said base or bottom and in which is placed a false bottom 61*, which is hinged at the rear end of the trap, as shown at a and'beneath the front portion of said false bottom I preferably place a light spiral spring a, which is designed to hold said end of the false bottom in a raised position.
The body portion of the trap, or that portion over the base or bottom of the trap, is composed of open wirework, as shown in Fig. 1, and consists, preferably, of transverse framepieces 0 at each end, the front end piece being shown in dotted lines and longitudinal side and top wires D and transverse end wires E.
Hinged to the transverse frame-piece O at F is a door G, to the lower outer corners of which is shown in dotted and the other in full linesin Fig. Land these springs are carried backwardly and secured to the bottom or base portion A, as shown at h.
Secured rigidly to the door G, transversely thereof, is a rod or bar K, having an upwardly and backwardly directed arm 70, at the end of which is an upwardly-directed lug or projection and a transverse wire or rod L is also secured to the top of the body portion of the trap, and pivotally mounted thereon is a trigger M. A bail N is pivoted to the opposite sides of the false bottom a, as shown at O, and is free to turn within the trap, and the trigger M is provided with a downwardly and backwardly directed arm m and a downwardly, forwardly, and upwardly curved arm m at the end of which is a downwardly-directed lug or projection m and the bail N passes through an eye m in the backwardlydirected arm of the trigger M, and in setting the trap the door G is raised and the arm 70 depressed and the lug or projection k engaged with the lug or projection m of the trigger M. When the trap is thus set, the strain of the springs H on the arm it exerts a forward and upward pull, and the trigger M is held substantially in the position shown in Fig. 1, and the spring 0. beneath the false bottom 0. also acts to retain the parts in this position.
A rat or other animal entering the trap will step on the forward end of the false bottom (1, and depress the same, and this will depress the backwardly-directed arm m of the trigger M and pull down said arm, and the arm or extension 70 of the rod or bar K will thus be released, and the door will be closed by the springs II, it being understood that the forward ends of the springs H are raised and extended when the trap is set or the door G opened, as hereinbefore described.
The trap may also be baited in the usual manner by placing the bait in the rear portion thereof, and it will be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction of my improved trap may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentthe body portion of the trap and provided at 1. A trap comprising a base or bottom portion having a false bottom hinged in the rear end thereof, and an open-wire body portion, said trap being provided with a door at the front which is hinged at the top thereof to its lower outer corners with spiral springs secured to the base or bottom at their rear ends, said door being also provided with a backwardlydirected arm, and a trigger ,or catch device in operative connection with the false bottom of the trap and operating in connection with said arm to hold the door in an open position, substantially as shown and described.
2. A trap comprising an open-wire body portion, and a base or bottom having a chamber or space in the top thereof, and a false bottom hinged at the rear end in said chant her or space, said trap being also provided at the front end with a door hinged at the top thereof to the body portion, and with spiral springs which are connected with the lower outer corners of said door and with the base or bottom portion, said door being provided with a backwardly-directed arm, and
a trigger or latch device inoperative connecerate in connection with said arm to hold the door open, substantially as shown and described.
3. A trap which is oblong in form and provided with a base or bottom portion having a chamber or recess in the top thereof, and a false bottom hinged in said chamber or reoess at the rear end thereof, said trap being also provided with an open-wire. body portion, and at the front end thereof with a spring-operated door which is hinged at the top to said body portion, said door being pr vided With a backwardly-directed arm, and said body portion of the trap with a pivoted trigger or latch device designed to operate in connection with said arm to hold the door in an open position, and means for connecting said trigger or latch device with the false bottom, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention Ihave signed my name, in presday of May, 1900.
ISAAC HYMAN.
