Description

DDDDD DD Y DD 0D w D0 SF Rj. PARKHURST. MAGHlNE PoR CLEANING wooL.
Patented'Aug. 20, 1867.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
@uiten ts'trs stmtt @Hirn STEPHEN R. PARKHURST, OF BLOOMFIELD, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR T0 EMILY R. PARKHURST, OF SAME PLACE.
`Letters Patent No. 67,901. dated August Z, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT LI MACHINE POR GLEANINGV WOL.
dige Stlgrnile nim-rh tu iu tlgcsi genus gnent mit ,making pitt uf tige smut.
Bc it known that I, STEPHEN R. PAnKnUnsr, of Bloomfield, in the count-y of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented, made, and applied to use, a certain new and useful Improvement in Machinery for Clean` ing Wool, Cotton, Snc.; and I do hereby decla-rc the followinll:T to be afull, clear, and exact description of the' said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein I have represented a vertical section of my said machine. l
This is an improvement upon the machine for which Letters Patent were granted to me July 24, 1866, and like letters of reference are used on my-present drawing as are usedupon the drawing accompanying the afore` said Letters Patent to indicate like parts, and reference is hereby expressly made to the said Letters Patent for u. description of the construction and operation of said parts.
The nature of my present invention consists in a carding mechanism combined with the picking-cylinder and cleaning devices shown in the aforesaid Letters Patent, whereby the fibrous material is still further cleaned and subjected to a. carding operation that renders the fibre adapted to delivery in the form of a. sliver or hat, thus enabling me to dispense with the carding machines heretofore employed for forming;v the material into slivers or bats after the same has been picked or cleaned in a separate machine.
In the drawing, a is the apron; b c, the feed-rollers; d, the picker-cylinder; el, the screen; e, the grating; m, the suction air-trunk; fand g, the steel-ring cylinders; h and z', the strippers, and k the receptacle, all substantially the same as in my aforesaid Letters Patent.
I employ a card-cylindcr, a2, to remove the fibrous material from the cylindersf and g and carry the same np to the stripper bt and worker c2, acting to open the wool in a manner corresponding to the stripper and worker in carding machines. There may be more than the one pair of rollers, I2 and c"', if desired. The fancy d2 loosens the fibres on the cylinder a2, in order that they may be taken by the doler e", and from thatV delivered by the comb-plate f2, vibrated by the eccentric and rod g2, and moving on the shaft 20. The fibre delivered b y the comb f2 may be delivered in the form of a sliver through thc revolving head hz, or wound in the form of a bat upon the roller il. The respective cylinders and rollers are revolved in the direction of the arrows on the drawing, and the surface speed is to bein the usualV proportions.' The respective cylinders and rollers are to be sustained in suitable frames andpulleys, and belts or gearing Aemployed to drive them in any convenient manner. And as these means are `avell known, and may be varied Yas circumstances require, are not further detailed or described. l n
This combination of mechanism enables the manufacturer to dispense with one card in a. set of cards, thus saving the space occupied thereby, the handling of the wool, andl delivers the fibre in a condition be'ttcr adapted to the subsequent operations.
What I claim, and desire to secure by LcttersPatent, is
1. The carding-cylinder a, in-combination with the cylinderf or g, stripper z. or i, and picker-cylinder d, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. I claim the doer e, in combination with the mechanism substantially as specified for opening and clean# ing wool or other fibre, whereby the said fibre is delivered from the picking or cleaning mechanism in the form of a sliver or bat, substantially as set forth. l
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this 18th day of February, A. D. 1867.
s. R. PARKHURsai.
