TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, E. A. LOCKE, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, and `State of Massachusetts, have invented an improved Tag or Label; and I do hereby declare that ,the following, taken in connection with the drawings, which accompany and form part of this specification, is a description' of my invention sufcient to enable those skilled in the art to practise it.

Letters Patent of the United States, No. 55,877, were granted to myself and 'Louis Heuser, on the 26th day of June, A. D. 1866, on an improved' tag or label for express companies, Ste., said patent, (which is owned by me,) relating to the manner of combining a paper or.. textile tag, which can be marked by writing thereupon, with a metallic tag protective of' the same, and with a metal band by which to secure the tag to the goods.

My present invention relates to the construction of the same class of tags or labels, and the drawings represent the construction embodying my improvements.

A shows a face, B a reverse view of the tag, and C a central longitudinal section of the same, these views all showing the position that the parts occupy when the tag is applied. a denotes the metallic or embossingtag, and b the tag or card of paper, pasteboard, or textile or other fabric,'which can be marked or written upon with pencil or ink. Both pieces are of substantially the same size, and two corners of the metal are turned over upon the part b, an eyelet, e, fastening them together and to the band d, as shown at C, the turned-over corners of the metal beingr also secured by this eyelet, as shown at B. Integral with the-band d, or forming part thereof, and projecting therefrom, is an eyelet, e, which, when the band isV connected to the parts ab by the eyelet c,

y projects through a hole, o, in the metal a, which hole is directly opposite asimilar one, o', in the card part b, l and along the band is a series of holes, f, through any one of which, by doubling over more or less of the i band, the eyelet e may be carried. These holes are so arranged that when .any one of them is brought into j connection with the eyelet eno other two shall come opposite, and no one shall come directly at the fold g, such i arrangement cbviating any weakness which would ensue by bending the band at any hole or by having the holes come directly opposite. The metal piece or tag a has a slot, L, cut through it, through which the end of the band is passed, bringing said end between the parts a and b of the tag, and thereby protecting it from catching, or from any strain by which the band would be liable to be torn away from the eyelet c when said eyelet is clinched over the band. The band and thetwo parts a and b having been connected by'the eyelet' tov i form the tag ready for use, Vthe band-eyelet projecting lthrough the hole o, as before described, when the tag is applied, the band is slipped through the handle, staple, band, or other part or parts of the article to he labelled, and being then folded the free end is passed through the slot 7L, as shown at A and C. 'The band is drawn in so as to leave the folded part of suitable length, and vthe band-eyelet isthen passed through the particular holef brought opposite thereto, when, by clinching the eyelet, the label will'be fastened to the trunk or other article, as will be readily understood. For the purposes of safety, or as a seal upon the tag, I also employ, in connection with the eyelet e, a lead or other soft-metal eyelet, z', which in clinching upset-s without reading, so that if said eyelet is removed, or is cut or broken to remove the label, such fact may always be known by examination ofthe tag. For still further provisionY for safety the end or ends ofsaid soft-metal eyelet may be embossed with identifying marks or letters after or in being applied, enabling it to be clearly ascertained if any person has in any way tampered with the tag. The soft-metal eyelet z' is preferably of cast metal, and is held in position before the tag is attached by the flange k extending between the band and the part i I claim a tag or label composed of the metal embossing-plate a, and the inscription or marking-plate b, when these are connected together and to a confining-band, d, by an eyelet, c, which at the same time secures the corners of the metal in bent-over position, substantially as shown and described. I

I also claim the construction of the band al with au eyelet, e, integral therewith and formed therefrom, substantially as and for the purpose described.

I also claim protecting the end of the band when the tag is applied by carrying it between the pieces a b, substantially as'shown and described.V l

I also claim the lead or soft-metal safety eyelet z' to be used substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
