UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. v
STEPHEN LANOESKES, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO EDWARD CAMPBELL, OF SAME PLACE.
BOILER.
JPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 660,258, dated October 23, 1900.
Application filed January 5,1900. Serial No. 498. (No model.)
To a. whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN LANCESKES, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at'Louisville, in the county of Jefierson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boilers; and I do herebydeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in theart to which it appertaius to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in steam-boilers (any class thereof) and more especially water-jackets therefor.
It has for its objects to dispense with the i5 ordinary brick or masonry setting, to promote the steam-generating capacity of the boiler, to lengthen or increase the life or utility of the boiler and fire-box, and to otherwise add to the longevity of the boiler.
It consists of the combination and arrangement of certain parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrat- 2 5 ing the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 3 isatransverse section.
Latitude is allowed herein as to details, as they may be changed without departing from the spirit of my invention and the same yetremain intact and be protected.
In carrying out my invention Iprovide a water chamber or jacket 1, suitably constructed 5 and applied to the fire-box2and boiler 3, preferably as shown, to extend along the front, sides, and back thereof, the particular type of boiler and fire-box having no effect whatever upon the scope of the invention. The
chamber or jacket 1 entirely dispensing with the brick or masonry setting has its walls 1 1 suitably secured in position by stay-bolts or otherwise throughout. This jacket or chamber entirely compasses the fire-box and 5 has a water-inlet pipe for the feed-water, as
at 4, a blow-off pipe at 5, and a circulationpipe 6 at its rear end communicating with the boiler at the opposite end. The boiler has preferably a series of pipes 7 7, opening therethrough and communicating with the water jacket or chamber 1 at a point below the water-line and arranged upon the inside of the boiler and discharging, preferably, at the bottom thereof. The water is thus discharged into the boiler at the bottom for reheating and conversion into steam previous to passing into the upper part or steam-chamber thereof, thus promoting the steam-generating capacity of the boiler. The aforesaid arrangement also provides for utilizing the heat of the combustion-chamber to initially heat the feed-water prior to passing it into the boiler and also expedites the conversion 7 of the water into steam. Also it will be observed thata complete circulation of the feedwater is set up throughout, it being taken at the lowest point in rear of the fire-box and thence permitted to pass upward around the latter and enter pipes discharging into the bottom of the boiler.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a steam-boiler, the combination,w-ith a boiler and fire-box, of a Water jacket or chamber and a series of pipes, connecting the water-jacket with the boiler, extending downwardly within the boiler, for the purpose set forth.
2. In a steam-boiler, the combination, with 8a a boiler and fire-box, of a water jacket or chamber having communication with the boiler, and a series of pipes arranged in said boiler and communicating with said jacket or chamber and discharging at the bottom of said boiler, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of a steam -boi1er, a fire-box, a water jacket or chamber, and a series of pipes opening through said boiler into said water jacket or chamber and discharg- 9o ing into said boiler, at the bottom, said boiler and jacket having circulation-pipe connection at the rear and said jacket having waterinlet-pipe connection near its bottom, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affiX in presence of two witnesses.
STEPHEN LKANOESKES.
my signature Witnesses:
Mrs. K. LANG, SAM. COPLINGER.
