IRA H. GILES, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
CAR-BRAKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent N0. 669,781, dated. March 12, 1901.
Application iiled August 8, 1900. Serial No. 26,297. (No model.)
T0 otZZ whom, t muy concern..-
Be it known that I, IRA H. GILEs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county'of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain held normally seated by a spring until such time as the car is derailed and the device is brought into engagement with one of the rails, at which time the valve is unseated to permit of the escape of air and the application of the brakes.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this speciiication, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of the truck, showing myimproved device in position. Fig. 2 is an end view of a part of the truck and track with the device in position. Fig. 3 is a like View showing the wheel derailed and the device in engagement with the rail. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view of the air-cylinder. sectional view of the valve and its operating post and plate. view of the operating-plate for the valve.
To put my invention into practice, I provide a bracket l, which is supported by bolts 1 from the truck or in any other suitable manner and has arranged thereon and rigidly secured thereto an air-cylinder V3, having a screw-cap l on its top and provided in its base with a concave valve-seat 5. This base is provided centrally of the valve-seat with Fig. 5 is a detail View and a transverse Fig. 6 is a detail perspective p the valve-seat 5 bya spring 10, engaging the upper face of the valve and the under face of the screw-cap 4.. rlhe cylinder is provided with an inlet-port ll, to which the flexible hose l2 is connected, and this hose is joined by the union 14 to the train-pipe l5. Upon the car being derailed the valve-plate 7 coming into engagement with the rail of the track forces said plate upwardly, unseating the valve 6 and allowing the air which is in the train-pipe to escape and making the application of the brakes. This valve-plate 7 also acts as a brake-shoe upon the upper face of the rail-tread when it engages with the saine.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In combination with a car having airbrakes, a bracket supported from the truck of said car, au air-cylinder supported from said bracket, said cylinder having a concave valve-seat and an outlet-port in its bottom, a pipe connecting said cylinder with the trainpipe, a valve engaging the valve-seat,a spring for holding said valve normally seated, and a valve-operating plate connected to the valve and provided on its upper face with buers, as and for the purpose described.
2. In a brake of the class described, the combination with the train-pipe, of an aircylinder having a valve-seat on its bottpm and an outlet-port centrally of the valve-seat, a spring within the cylinder for holding the valve normally seated, a pipe establishing communication between the air-cylinder and train-pipe, a valve-operating plate below the air-cylinder, a centrally-arranged post car- IOO operating-plate suspended below the cylinder, and a threaded pin orpost arranged centrally of the operating-plate and extending through the outlet-port of the cylinder, conmeeting the operating-plate to the valve, es and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I efx my signature 2o in the presence of two Witnesses.
IRA H. GILES.
