IMPROVBD WASHING MACHINE.

Be it known that I, DANIEL S. BECKLEY, of Toledo, in -the county of Tama, and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful imprcvement'in Washing Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, i whichi Figure 1 is a perspective'view, and

Figure 2 is a central vertical longitudinal section.

The same'letters are employed in both guresin indicating parts which are identical.

Ais the box into which the wash water and clothes are to be placed. It rests upon four legs. The standards B are attached to the sides, and support the beam B', which isso attached to them by journals as to permit its free oscillation. The rods D passthrough holes in the beam B', which will -permit them to play up and down. They are surrounded immediately below the bea-m by the spiral springs E, which, restingagainst shoulders, press down the rods E and rubbing-board F, which, when the machine is in use, rests upon the clothes, which `are placed between it and the ribbed concave G. The lnwerface of the rubbing-board is convex, and also ribbed in like mannei with the concave G. Instead of these ribsroll'ers may be used in either the concaveG or rubbing-board F, or in both. The handle H is pivoted to the rods D, and is used to move the rubbingboard forward and back over the concave. A cord, I, is attached to the handle H, and carried over a pulley, K, and attached to the centre of the rubbing-board. The length of' this cord is so regulated that by pressing the end of the handle held by the operator downward, the rubbing-board may be .raised so as to relieve the clothes. from too great pressure from lthe action of the springs E. The pressure to be brought to bear on theclothes is thus entirely within the control of the operator.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters APatent, is-

A washing machine in which the pressure upon the clothes, placed between the rubbing-board F and concave G, may be regulated by means of the springs E, lever H, cord I, and pulley K, when combined and arranged to operate substantially as set forth.
