PACKING-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 664,084, dated December 18, 1900.
Application filed February 19,1900. Serial No. 5 ,791. (No model.)

Be it known that I, ISAIAH L. HAUSER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to packing-cases, and more particularly to that class of receptacles known as knockdown boxes.
It consists in combinining suitable side, top, and bottom members with angle edges, corner-pieces, or stiffeningstrips and means for uniting the parts and attaching the removable top member.
The objects of this invention are to provide a suitable packing-case that may be cheaply constructed, that will be lightin weight and hermetically tight and strong, and that may be readily taken apart and packed in small compass for shipping and quickly put together when required for use. Further objects andadvantages will be more specifically pointed out in the following description and claim.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a packing-caseembodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. l looking in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail on the line 3 3 of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the cover of the box,'showing the arrangement of the angle-pieces. Fig. is a sectional detail of one end of the cover somewhat enlarged. Fig. 6 shows a nest of the angle-pieces as arranged for shipping.
Ais a packing-case having the sides a of and the ends b b. Angle-pieces c c are provided on the outside of the corners formed by the side and end members, and similar angle-pieces d d are adapted to fit on the inner corners so formed. Screw-bolts ce, having nuts ff, are used to securely unite the angles and box members, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The bottom member of the box g is united to the side and end members a b in a similar manner by angle-pieces h, which over or under lap the angles c d at the corners.
The cover I consists of the top member t, the outer angles 7o, and the inner angles Z, which overlap at the corners and are held around thetop by the bolts e e. In order to accomplish the fastening of the cover upon the box when it is in place, the nuts f fon the inner faces of the depending sides of the angles are soldered in position ready to receive the bolts e e, as shown in Figs. 4and 5, and for convenience all of the nuts may be so attached.
It will be readily seen how the side and bottom members, with their uniting angles or edges, can be assembled. The diiiculty heretofore has been to iind some suitable manner for fastening the cover. This is overcome as above described. After the box proper has been assembled it is only necessary to slip the cover into position and insert the screwbolts, which will engage with the iixed nuts on the inside of the box.
The side, end, bottom, and top members may be made of any material, but preferably of sheets of stiff trunk-board or other form of paper-board, with the angles of steel or galvanized iron, but may be of any other material. I have found that such a construction, wherein for every outside corner-angle 01 edge piece there is a corresponding inside piece and the two are iirmly united by bolts passing therethrough and through the sides of the box, makes an exceedingly tight, strong, and durable box and prevents any liability of leakage at the corners.
When the box is knocked down for shipping, the sides will readily pack into very small compass, and the angles or edges may be arranged as in Fig. 6, so as to take up the smallest amount of space.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- In combination in a knockdown box, flat sides and bottom, inner and outer angle-strips for securing the meeting edges of the sides and bottoms together, and va top having depending inner and outer flanges, the outer flanges fitting between the outer vertical corner-strips and the sides and ends, and the inner iiange fitting within the box and abutting the innerfaces of the inner strips at the corners of the box, said flanges and strips having alining openings in the same, the inner ends of said openings having threaded extensions, substantially as described.
