Description
VASSER CRENSHAW, OF AUGUSTA, ARKANSAS.
HEAD-REST.
sPiEcIFIeATIoN forming peut of Lettere Patent Np. 659,052, dated october a, 1900.
Application iled April 13, 1900. serial No. 12,749. ItNo model.)
To @ZZ whom t may con/067%:
Be it known that I, VAssER CRENsHAw, a citizen of the United States, residing at Augusta, in the county of Woodruff and State of Arkansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Dental Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in adjustable head-rests for dental chairs; and its primary object is .to provide a device of simple and durable construction which may be readily attached to chairs of various forms.
To these ends the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which-J Figure l is a rear elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a central Vertical section therethrough. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the plates. Fig. 4 is an enlarged section through the swivel-plate, and Fig. 5 is a plan view thereof.
Referring to said figures by numerals of reference, l and 2 are the front and rear plates, r
respectively,of the device, formed, preferably, of suitable spring metal and provided with arms 3, which extend therefrom in opposite directions, as shown. The upper arms of these plates are connected by means of strips 4, which may be of any suitable length and which are preferably formed therewith. The lower arms of the front plate 1 are provided at their free ends with toes or projections 5, which are adapted to be engaged by hooks 6, formed at the free ends of forward extensions 7, formed with and projecting from the lower arms of the rear plate 2. It will be seen that by this construction all of the parts hereinbefore described may be readily formed from one piece of sheet metal. The rear plate 2 is provided at its center with a threaded opening 8, adapted to receive a thumb-screw 9, having a plate 10, swiveled to the inner end thereof and adapted to bear upon a rod 11, which is secured at its upper end to the headrest l2, of any desired form and construction.
In operation the extensions 7 are sprung out of engagement with the lower arms of the plate 1, and said plate and the plate 2 are placed on opposite sides of the upper crossstrip of the back of a chair of ordinary construction. Said extensions are then brought forward under said cross-strip and placed in engagement with the toes of the arms of the plate l. This will, as is obvious, securely lockfthe device in position upon the back of the chair. The rod 11 is then placed between the cross-strip of the back of the rear plate 2, and the swiveled plate 10 is then forced inward by means of the screw 9 against said rod, clamping the same rmly against the cross-strip of the chair-back, thereby holding same securely in adjusted position. By this construction it will be seen that I provide a device which may be readily applied to chairs of ordinary construction, by means of which the head-rest may be readily adjusted to any desired height.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a head-rest, the combination with a front plate; having arms projecting therefrom; of a similar rear plate having arms thereto; connecting-strips between and integral with the upper arms of said plates; toes upon the lowerarms of the front plate; hooked extensions upon the Corresponding arms of the 'rear plate adaptedV to engage said toes; a screw mounted within the rear plate; a plate swiveled thereto; and a rod between the plates and adapted to be engaged by said swiveled plate.
2. In a head-rest, the combination with a rod having a rest at one end thereof, of an attachment struck up from a single piece of metal, and comprising a rear plate having a threaded aperture thereimarms extending in opposite directions from the plate, a front lOO plate, arms extending in opposite directions tensions upon the lower arms of the rear plate, hooks thereon, toes u pon thelower arms of the front plate adapted to engage said hooks, a plate having a groove therein adapted to receive the rod, and a screw engaging the aperture within the rear plate and swiveled to said grooved plate.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a headrest attachment struck up from a single piece of metal and com prising a rear plate having a threaded aperture therein, arms extending in opposite directions from the plate, a front plate, arms extending in opposite directions VASSER CRENSHAW.
